The Summer Of Blockbusters

2015 has been an extraordinary year in big-name films. From the sequels to the reboots, numerous eye-opening blockbuster movies have graced the silver screen this summer. Let’s take a look back at some of the biggest movies that have been released in theaters so far.

Furious 7

The seventh installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise was released in April 2015, roughly five months after the tragic death of the film’s star Paul Walker.

The film precedes the events of "Fast and Furious 6" and chronologically occurs after the series’ third film, "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift." After gaining amnesty for their prior crimes, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and the rest of his crew return to America, only to deal with the vengeance of a rogue special forces agent.

Although seven movies may seem like the series has been dragged out too far, "Furious 7" has been considered the most successful, both critically and financially, out of all the films in the franchise. "Furious 7" is the second-highest grossing film of 2015 and fifth all-time worldwide, with an astounding $1.5 billion at the box office.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron

The 11th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the sequel to "The Avengers" was released in early May. The films serves as the penultimate movie in “Phase 2” of Marvel’s intertwined film franchise.

Following what occurred in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," more specifically in the traditional Marvel mid-credit scene, the Avengers assemble once again to recover Loki’s sceptor. The greater trouble, however, comes from the spontaneous creation of Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) project named Ultron, who believes the only way to protect Earth is to eliminate the human race.

While the second Avengers film may not have mesmerized audiences like the first film, "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" still packed a punch as an excellent superhero film. The film also killed it at the box office; the film’s opening weekend was third all-time by grossing $191 million and totaled $1.4 billion, right behind the the aforementioned "Furious 7" for sixth all-time.

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Mad Max series brought three films from 1979 to 1985 (and also brought the infamous Thunderdome into existence) prior to the 2015 reboot, "Mad Max: Fury Road." The film had previously been through what is considered “development hell” for about 10 years due to the attacks on September 11, 2001 and the start of the Iraq War.

Tom Hardy took the place of Mel Gibson as the titular Max Rockatansky, who joins forces with Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) following a nuclear strike that had decimated the world they knew. The duo, on a search to find their homeland, must deal with the merciless gang of looters that roams the wasteland of their former land.

Despite the difficulty to finally get the film on its feet and into theaters, "Mad Max: Fury Road" has been praised incredibly by critics worldwide. The film has already been considered one of the greatest actions film of all-time, along some greats like "The Matrix," "Die Hard," and "The Terminator". Although its box office success may not exactly translate to the actual success of the film, the movie hit the nation like a widespread storm.

Entourage

Four years after the hit HBO show of the same name ended its run, "Entourage" returned by making its long-awaited film debut. The movie’s plot resumes a short time after the series finale.

With Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) as the head of the studio, Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) is ready to for his return to stardom. Yet when the film he is starring and directing is extremely over budget, Vince and the rest of his crew must deal with their financiers before their potential blockbuster film crumbles.

Even though "Entourage" was extremely hyped, the film was only moderately successful in the box office and was not critically successful. For die-hard "Entourage" fans like myself, the film served as a the perfect dosage needed to fulfill and satisfy a viewer following the show’s completion in 2011.

Jurassic World

It is say to safe that "Jurassic World" may not have only been the most highly-anticipated movie of this summer, but also of the past several years. Twenty-two years after the original "Jurassic Park" and 14 years after the last film in the Jurassic Park franchise, "Jurassic World" was released in theaters in mid-June.

Twenty-two years following the horrific incident that occurred at the original Jurassic Park site, a dinosaur-themed amusement park on the infamous Isla Nublar has been growing in popularity. But when the park’s newest attraction, a genetically modified dinosaur, endangers the visitors of the island, a Velociraptor trainer (Chris Pratt) must track down the dinosaur before it wreaks havoc and threatens the lives of everyone at the park.

With all of hype surrounding the movie, "Jurassic World" was able to live up to most of the expectations. Although the movie was fairly successful in a critical sense, the film absolutely shattered box office records. The film grossed a record-breaking $525 million worldwide on its opening weekend and accumulated the third-highest gross with $1.6 billion.

Inside Out

"Inside Out," Pixar Animation’s 15th film, and its first since "Monster’s University" back in 2013, was released in theatres in mid-June.

The premise of the film revolves around the mind of a young girl named Riley and her five basic emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). When Riley and her family relocate to a new home halfway across the country, the five emotions are put the test and must guide Riley through her life-changing experience.

It is almost a given that Disney and Pixar create an entirely original and a completely successful animated film that will entertain audiences of all ages. The film has been rated amongst the best for Pixar films and has been praised for not only the performances, but for the unique concept, premise and subject matter. "Inside Out" was also the fifth-highest grossing film of the year so far.

Ant-Man

"Ant-Man" serves as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 12th film and its second film of the year. The new original film is the official end of “Phase 2” of Marvel’s franchise

After his protege takes the reigns of his company, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) scouts and trains a recently released convict, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), to operate his powerful shrinking suit in order to obtain his top secret information back. But when Pym’s apprentice takes advantage of the Ant-Man suit’s technology, Lang must take on the Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll) to protect his mentor and his family.

"Ant-Man" was actually Marvel’s second-lowest opening in the box office, but still managed to record a gross of $329 million worldwide. Although the "Ant-Man" comic and concept was practically unknown to the general audience prior to its inception, the originality and its diversion from most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as complimented for its rather crude humor that is standard with Marvel films.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
