The Summer After College

From freedom to Cinderella

The Summer After College

After the academic year is finally over, we college kids cannot wait to move home. There will be home-cooked meals, your own comfortable bed, your pets, laundry you don't have to pay for and most importantly cabinets stocked full of food! The thought of all this makes summer the one thing you look forward to. Moving home from college and just being home sounds like pure bliss. But there may just be a few things that you haven't thought of. Things that might make college sound more appealing.

Curfews

Throwback to the days of high school when your parents gave you a curfew. You just have to smile and nod because you are, in fact, living under your parent's roof and their rules go. So who cares that you partied until three am every weekend or weekday (whatever night the drink specials were) while you were away at college, 10pm it is. Sure. I mean I didn't even think about going out until 10 at school, but yep, their rules. See ya at 10, Dad...

50 Question Game

Yep throwin' it back to the good ol' glory days once again. Before you go out with your friends you get bombarded with questions like you are sitting in front of a computer screen trying to answer as many questions as you can for that timed online final you forgot about. "Where you going?" "Who are you going with?" "How many guys are going to be there?" "Take your jacket off, let me see what you're wearing." "(insert name here), that is not something you will leave my house wearing. Why don't you just go put on a t-shirt and some jeans?" "What time do you think you'll be back?" "You aren't going to be drinking are you?" "You don't know what time you will be back? Well then you can be back at 10pm so there isn't any guessing."

......need I say more?

Chores

Most people can think back on the days of their teenage years being given a list of chores to do while Mom and Dad were at work. Well, welcome home for the summer! You magically have a chore list again. Thanks, Mom. Nothing to make you feel like you are 12 again like a list of chores to complete before your parent's get home from work. Yay! Because we weren't capable of cleaning the house without a list? And not to mention the fact that you too have a job, but yes, the chores!

Old Friends

The one that takes us all by surprise, the number of high school buddies we still have on our friends list. You come home from an exhausting year of partying and studying and think things will go back to how they were last summer but quickly realize that will never happen. People move on, change, distance themselves from their past and lose contact with their best friends from high school. So hold on to the memories, hold onto the friendships you have from high school, they may never be the same. Hold the new friendships from college even closer. The friends you make in college will be the friends standing by your side at your wedding one day. Either way, old or new, always make time for your friends while you are home for the summer.

Hold on tight to the fun, endless freedom you have during the school year. It will be squandered by the good ol' rules from your parents. They probably aren't trying to make your summer miserable, but I promise you will think that at least once. So cheer to the chores, the curfews, and the questions! Let's do this.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
