It all started with a simple question, "Would you like a pen?" and the next thing I knew I somehow became a part of something much bigger than myself. Joining a sorority never crossed my mind. But in one week I went from getting a pen to receiving and accepting a bid to join a sorority. The idea of bonding with other girls and making a difference in this crazy world was enticing, but the stigma was apprehensive.
Girls who join a sorority are immediately judged. There are so many stereotypes that cover the values and achievements of their organizations. We're judged on our looks, intellect, and social life; meanwhile, our philanthropy missions and accomplishments are ignored.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am stupid.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am stuck up.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am "easy."
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am a partier.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am fake.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am superficial.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am incompetent.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am a slut.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am an alcoholic.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I wear a lot of makeup.
Because I joined a sorority, does not mean I am spoiled.
Because I joined a sorority, I stepped out of my comfort zone into the unknown.
Because I joined a sorority, I am gaining support from strangers.
Because I joined a sorority, I will find lifetime friends.
Because I joined a sorority I will create a network for my future career.
Because I joined a sorority, I will make an impact on others around me.
Because I joined a sorority, I see the beauty within.
Because I joined a sorority, I will achieve great things.
Because I joined a sorority, I strive to be the best I can be and represent my letters with pride.
No, maybe I am not your cookie-cut shaped "sorority girl," but what I am though is a Real. Strong. Woman.
