You love your friends to death and swear you could spend hours on end without ever getting tired of them...until you're forced to. Spending nonstop, extended amounts of time with anyone is enough to make even the most tolerant person go a little crazy. Road tripping is one of the situations that can certainly put friendships to the test. From my experience, I've found that there are certain stages of every road trip. In honor of spring break, here is the process of emotions you can expect to encounter when road tripping a long distance with some of your closest friends.
Hour 1: Pure excitement
You're so excited for the anticipated destination that you simply cannot contain yourself. You're feeling stress free and have nothing but love for all your friends.
Hour 2: Continued excitement with prolonged jam sessions
You're still unbelievably excited for this trip and celebrate by doing nonstop jamming with your friends to the songs on the playlist you made specifically for the car ride because you're basic like that.
Hour 3: Continued excitement with slight discomfort
At this point, you have to pee and you're hungry. The gross gas station bathroom and off-brand chips can still satisfy you though because your mind is still on the destination, and nothing can break your happiness.
Hour 4: Intermittent jam sessions
People are starting to wind down, and the loud music is giving you a headache. Every now and then a song comes on that you and your friends can't resist so you blare it despite your now slightly less-enthusiastic singing.
Hour 5: Boredom
Everyone is quieting down and the excitement is wearing off. You're forced to stare out the window at the beautiful scenery of highway construction and passing semis or try to sleep.
Hour 6: Severe boredom and car sickness
At this point, you've been switching between a variety of social media apps each with absolutely nothing new to offer because normal people aren't posting things every five seconds like you. Because you've been staring at your phone screen for so long, car sickness usually sets in which makes things even worse.
Hour 7: Irritation
You're tired, cramped, hungry, and you've had to pee for the past two hours. Every last thing is getting on your nerves, especially the way your friend's leg has been in your space the whole car ride and the fact that your other friend feels the need to photographically document every moment of the trip.
Hour 8: Exhaustion
You've been sitting in a car for eight hours doing absolutely nothing but you somehow feel like you could sleep for a decade. The cold window you rest your head on and the completely vertical seat you're sitting in have never felt more comfortable.
Hour 9: Outburst of hatred
You simply cannot stand a single person in the car any longer. Everything anyone does ticks you off, and you're physically unable can't keep your mouth shut about it anymore. The thought of having to drive back home with this group of people makes you cringe.
Hour 10: Dead silence
You're all starting to question your friendships and hoping that the vacation isn't already ruined. You're too sleep deprived and irritated to realize that everyone is fighting over absolutely nothing and you choose to continue being immature about the situation.
Hour 11: Utter joy
The driver breaks the silence by announcing that you're just a few minutes away from your destination. Everyone is suddenly friends again and you have an unexpected burst of energy. You're all thanking God that you made it and (surprisingly) didn't kill each other in the process. Tears of joy are certainly shed.
