If you weren’t at Battle of the States on last Thursday you definitely missed out. It's one of the most talked about events all year, and the class of Quintessence 10 didn’t disappoint. Here’s a quick rundown of how it went down at BOTS this year:
In case you’ve never attended, BOTS is basically a showdown between different regions that are represented by the freshman class at Hampton. Every year students from every class fill the seats of Ogden Hall to watch them compete in fashion, dance and talent.
This year the Midwest started things off with their theme “The Wiz.” It was a perfect opening to a crazy night. They began their performance glowing in the dark. With The Wiz Live reaching record-breaking numbers this past year, it was a great idea to use the theme. Dorothy slayed on the runway, along with the Lion who was wearing that fur. Evalina was definitely giving me life with her red suit and that whip. They even had tricycles!
The West Coast was next with their fun-filled Toy Story. They were spot on with the costumes! Each person on the runway represented a toy in the movie. Even Emperor Zurg started serving during his choreography. There were Barbie dolls who were doing full blown dance moves in, what looked like, 4-inch heels. The West definitely was not playing around.
Last not most certainly not least the South came in armed and ready for war, which went perfect with their Army theme. Starting off, pretending to be in boot camp their whole fashion runway was heavy hitting. Other than the drill sergeant, there were no real stand out characters but the whole group gave the same amount of energy. There fashion choices only consisted of black and camouflage but they were wearing it! Every movement was coordinated perfectly. What a perfect way to end the category.
The dance portion went in the same order with Midwest starting it off. They danced to songs like “Legend” by Drake, “Flap Your Wings” by Nelly, and “Rain Down on Me” by Twista. The girls were also rocking cute pairs of shiny green leggings, to remind everyone that we were still in the land of Oz.
The West’s dances consisted of heavy California influences. They danced to artist like YG, Khelani, and Tyga doing some of their signature dances like coasting and crumping.
The South stuck with their heavy hitting army theme and came out swinging once again. They began their routine with a full army march that turned into a step and a dab. They danced to southern club anthems like “Pipe it Up” by Migos, “Donk” by Soulja Boy, “Walked In” by Bankroll Fresh. They ended the performance pretending to “kill off”all the other regions.
The talent section went by pretty quickly for every region. Every region focused on Black Lives Matter and featured spoken word. The Midwest had a great poem based off of “When I Think of Home.” The West used a poem that talked about toys and how they relate to the black community. The South also featured spoken word but the highlight of their performance was the singing and the live instruments.
When the results were tallied, the judges decided that the South took it all. This is their fourth victory in the last five years. Although we definitely missed the North and the DMV, it was still a great night. Here’s some footage of the whole event:
