The Reason Behind The Mask

Why we as adults love Halloween so much.

The Reason Behind The Mask

Halloween is one of those times where everyone loves to dress up, even full grown adults as well as children. We pretend and like to put on someone else’s face. That be a super heros mask or outfit and cape, or the mask of a clown, and or an animal or skeleton outfit. There are so many things to choose from, but the true art of Halloween is being someone you’re not and it being totally okay.

You finally have that day to pretend and to forget who you truly are. It is socially accepted to be someone else, hell it's supported and encouraged to dress up as something so creative and crazy, and or even terrifying with special makeup effects. Halloween is the day where we get to wear a mask, physically or non physically.

So many people exclaim how Halloween is their favorite holiday, because things are scary or you get to dress up, but there is sometimes a reason behind that reason for dressing up.

Kids dress up because that’s what they want to be when they are older, they can choose to be something else, anything else. They see if as fun, imaginative and silly at times and think “wow I want to be a princess when I’m older, or a fireman, or even a police officer”. Kids dress up because they see their future selves, one day a year they can show everyone else what they want to be, and see what their friends want to be as well.

We like to dress up and do our make up because deep down most of us are tired of who we are, what we do for a living and how our life is so one day a year for it to be totally okay to get lost in the character we portray, we take that chance at being someone or something else.

Day in and day out, many people are not satisfied with their lives, they long for something more. They long to be that doctor that they knew they couldn’t handle the stress, they long to be a soldier but knowing due to a medical condition could not physically do so. Halloween is a scapegoat for many. Behind that mask that we wear that day is actual happiness because for a single day out of the whole year we get to whatever we want. There is no judgment to what we are, or how scary, funny, creative the outfit and costume may be, we are present in that moment.

See many people wear this figurative mask of a smile many days of their life trying to hold together how they truly feel. Hiding the pain, the suffering, the stress that they are enduring day in and day out, and trying to act okay with this make of a smile they constantly hold.

Halloween allows us to rip away that figurative mask, the one that hides our true feelings and allows us to pretend yet again but in a different way. It allows us to live our dreams, forget our worries, and to laugh a bit more when wearing this kind of fun creative mask.

The reason behind the Halloween mask is not to hide your true feelings but allows us to express them. We can be whatever and whomever we choose to be on this spooky day of the year. This mask shows others and ourselves our true desires, likes and ideas.

So tear off that mask you may wear day in and day out and replace it with one that is more fitting to your face and yourself. This Halloween, be whomever, whatever you may like, be something or someone that will make you happy; but don’t be afraid to be yourself: decked out in makeup and capes and costumes that is. Most of all those, make the reason behind this Halloween mask be one that doesn’t hide your feelings or stress but one that expressed who you truly are, your life’s, and dreams; one that shows others you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
