Okay, I know I am going to upset a lot of people with this post. So be it. I need to get a few things off my chest and if this causes an uproar- I can take it. "If you are neutral in situations of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor". I can't be neutral on this.
This election has been rough-going. After writing that sentence I had to stop and stare at my page at what an understatement that just was. But I have a finite amount of time to keep your attention, so for your sake, I will not go into it. Nearly everyone in America has a good understanding of how disastrous this year has been going.
Recently there were tapes leaked of Donald Trump saying some very crude things on a bus. The main take-away from the transcript was when Trump said of a female correspondent "when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab 'em by the pussy." When confronted about it, over and over again, Trump's excuse was. "it was just locker room talk".
I get it. Often there are things we will say in front of our friends but not in public. It's very possible that he was just trying to get a laugh out of his buddies, gain some praise from them. No big deal. I do that sometimes. But I'd like to remind you all that there almost is no difference between what Trump says to his buddies and what he says in public. Take the interview where he said, "if Ivanka weren't my daughter perhaps I'd be dating her". Is anyone else extremely disgusted?
Now, I know what some might be thinking of the people who are choosing to fixate on this tapes. I have been written off as a "feminazi" many times (why do we have to associate radical feminists with such horrible people as nazis again?), and I will continue to be seen as such. As I am getting older I have come to understand some things are just not worth getting so worked up over. And I've even come to realize I have been a follower at times. Oh, social media is enraged about it? Me too! So I spew outrage into the world about something that I normally wouldn't be outraged about. But this is not one of those things.
When I hear some of the derogatory, dehumanizing, and overall disgusting things that come out of Trump's mouth and my heart stops in my chest, I know these things are a big deal. No, it's not just "locker room talk" when you actively live by some of the disgusting things you say and continue to say outside of the "locker room" (in this case, anywhere private and out of the public eye). As a woman I cannot help but take offense to his words.
Trump supporters will say, "they are just words. They cannot hurt you." But it goes beyond words for Trump. Does anyone know that he currently has a rape case filed against him? Oh, so since that was 12 years ago you no longer find it relevant? Well, that is an egregious error on your part, because in my mind, once a rapist, always a rapist. Rape is not accidental. A rapist would not claim he/she never meant for it to happen. No, he/she meant for that to happen. It is a deliberate act that is never committed passively. And it occurs when human beings are regarded as objects or possessions.
I'm a grown woman living in the 21st century. The word "pussy" does not offend me. But the ideals behind what was said does.
