Valentines's Day can be considered one of the most dreaded holidays known to man. But why?
This holiday was originally to celebrate Saint Valentinus, who performed weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to marry. He then was imprisoned for this act. Before being executed, Saint Valentinus wrote a letter to the jailer's daughter. He signed his letter with 'From your Valentine' and was buried on February 14th.
Valentine's Day was never associated with love and romance until the middle ages. In England by the 1700s it began to resemble to holiday that we all know today. Lovers began to give cards, also known as 'valentines' to each other along with gifts and flowers.
The main question is, why do many people always dread this day? I get it, people feel lonely, undesired or they think about the Valentine's Day Massacre, or the fact that those candy hearts that say gushy love words on them taste like crap. But there is more to this holiday than people think.
It is an excuse to tell the important people around you that you love and care for them. As humans we are constantly busy and I feel as though we do not appreciate people or things enough, only until they are out of site.
One typical stereotype of Valentine's Day that needs to be broken is that you are supposed to buy flowers, candy, chocolates, and expensive jewelry for your loved one to express your love for them. And the worst part of it all, is that people expect this from others and are sad or mad when they don't get anything.
There are many other ways you can express your love to someone; a hug, a kiss, or a simple "I love you".
There are also a million ways to say "I love you"; "put your seatbelt on", "get some rest", "watch your step", or "did you eat?".
This is a full day dedicated to you and for you to tell everyone around you that you love and appreciate them. This is not just a day for your typical star-crossed lovers.
So go out and tell your mom and dad, your dog, your best friend, your professor, or even your boss that you appreciate them and are thankful for the opportunities they have given you in your life, because you never know when the next time you see them will be.
Being single on Valentine's Day is okay and perfectly normal. You don't need to be madly in love with someone, only madly in love with life and what it grants you.
And if you are wanting my advice, yeah I know it can be nice to give gifts and receive gifts on Valentine's Day, but why don't you give them gifts on a random Wednesday, or March third. You don't need a specific day to tell someone you love them, that is what every day is for.
From,
Your Valentine
