It’s officially the month of Halloween! Or "October," as some call it. If any time of year is packed full of things to do, the tenth month takes the cake. To kick off this month of utter-awesome, here’s just a smattering of all the spooky (or not so spooky) things to do.
1. Relive (watch) your childhood!
Revisit that magical land of “Halloweentown.” Meet up with the Sanderson sisters in “Hocus Pocus.” Embrace your inner Pumpkin King/Queen with “The Nightmare Before Christmas!” Whatever your nostalgic poison is, re-watch it (or all of them) and remember the good old days.
2. Go to a Fall Festival!
Remember getting your face painted while sinking your fangs into a candy apple? That doesn’t have to be a memory. Hit up google and find a fall festival nearby! Or, if you have younger siblings/nieces and nephews/cousins, volunteer at their elementary school’s fall festival. You’ll have a blast witnessing the excitement of all those little ghouls and goblins.
3. Visit a pumpkin patch or orchard!
What’s cuter than a day spent in a pumpkin patch or apple orchard? Absolutely nothing. Go pick out a pumpkin to carve or paint. Drink some apple cider, enjoy the foliage and maybe even get the chance to hear live music. You’ll be supporting a local farmer/business and living in an aesthetic wonderland.
4. Bake!
If you’re trying to diet: Just stop. Now is not the time. Now is the time for cookies, pumpkin bread, roasted pumpkin seeds, candy and caramel apples, and every other delicacy you can imagine. Find some recipes and haul your Hallobooty to the kitchen!
5. Decorate!
You can decorate a lot for Christmas, but it doesn’t top Halloween. Go all out. Decorate your yard, your door, your bedroom, and any other crevice you can find. Decorating is so much fun and with paradises like Dollar Tree, it doesn’t have to be expensive. Decorating includes yourself, too! Whether you’re buying it or making it, your costume doesn’t need to suffer. Knock the socks off those skeletons!
6. Seek out spooky shows!
If you want to add some spice into your constant rerun of your favorite Halloween shows and movies, throw something new in! If you aren’t caught up on “American Horror Story,” you have an excuse to binge! If you are, don’t forget to check out the new season! Also look into shows like “Scream Queens.”
7. Read!
Maybe you aren’t that into movies and television. Maybe you are, but you also like reading. Either way, there are so many great Halloween-esque books to indulge in. Remember Alvin Schwartz’s “Scary Stories?” They are still absolutely terrifying. Loved the movie “Coraline?” Yeah, it’s a book. Really want some nostalgia? “Goosebumps!” If your tastes are more refined and matured, check out some classics. There’s Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” or Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot.” Actually, there’s literally almost anything ever written by Stephen King.
Of course, all of these wonderful things are only a glimpse at the activities that come with October. Enjoy this month of Halloween before it’s gone. Stay spooky.
