"Mom" is just another word for "queen".
This Sunday was Mother’s Day, and if you are anything like me, you were stressing about this most important of holidays. This day is dedicated to honoring the women that have raised us, held our hands as we took our first steps, jumped for joy when we said our first words, and cried tears of joy at every milestone along the way. Mothers, from the very moment we enter this world, are by our side through every experience — good, bad, or ugly. How amazing is that? This made me think, why do our mothers only get one day out of the year to be recognized? We could spoil our mothers all day every day for the entirety of their lives and still not be able to repay them for the love and sacrifices that they have made for us, but that does not mean we shouldn't try. And it certainly does not mean that we should limit this appreciation to one day.
My mother deserves to be pampered and spoiled, to be gifted a castle and a treasure chest of jewels, but with only five dollars to my name I am unable to make these purchases at the moment. (Hey, a girl can dream, can't she?) As college students at the end of the semester, I'm sure a lot of people are in the same boat. Here’s what we don't realize: we don't need money to prove to our mothers how grateful we are for their love.
As a little girl, I would kiss my mom on the cheek every morning as I got out of the car at school. One day I stopped. Why? Because I'm too old to show my mom affection? This, whether it be a kiss on the cheek as we leave for class or a hug as we rush for the door, would be an excellent gift to give a mother every day of the year. Since we all know how moms love to reminisce, why not write her a letter in which you tell her fondest memory of the two of you from your point of view? Knowing that the moment had an impact on you would make it that much more special for her.
This past Mother’s Day, we should have given Mom the best gift possible: our love. Let's strive to show our mothers how grateful we are for them. As their children, we need to remember that our mothers view our very existence as the most amazing gift they have ever received. They would be more pleased with a hug and “I love you” than if we gifted them a million diamond rings and a month-long vacation to Bora-Bora. Don't feel guilty that you couldn't buy her the world -- feel blessed that you are her world.
