Everything happens for a reason. Every grain of sand, every star in the sky, every feeling, every itch, every memory, everybody. It wasn’t much of a religious fixation as it was a way of knowing. The knowledge that every kiss, breath, burst of happiness is for a reason. This reason, although not clear now, will reveal itself under the experience of the rising sun or a split second while in the shower. It’s the sudden jolt in your stomach, the kind that makes you grasp something for support, that the reasoning for everything leading up to that moment is supposed to happen.
It’s a breathtaking thought really. One that squeezes your heart until you can’t bear it any longer, and then lets go with less than a moment to spare. It all leads back to that one clause; everything happens for a reason. The sentence itself is actually slightly comforting in a way that’s difficult to explain. A deeper meaning would reveal that no matter what happens in your life, whether it be gut-wrenchingly impossible to handle, or quite possibly the greatest moment of your life; you are on the right track, and that moment is meant to happen in the greatest form of itself with everything that it entails.
Think about that boy or girl you are dating now, and then think about all the ones that you dated before. How heartbroken and teary eyed you were after each one ended, but how explosively happy you were when a new one began. All of those people you dated before lead up to the one that you are seeing now. If certain steps weren't taken in the exact order that they were in your past, you might be in a completely different world, with different people, different friends and possibly a different attitude.
It's important to keep this in mind when you hit a bump in the road and have the sick feeling that you are doing everything wrong. I've failed many tests in my day and after each one I cry and mope for a couple hours and it feels as though my world is crashing in on me. Then I remember something; good or bad, everything happens for a reason. That paper you bombed last week, happened so you could learn to swallow your pride and ask for help, your girlfriend broke up with you so you could marry the woman of your dreams years later, you got a flat tire and were late to work so you could finally learn how to change a tire and you fell and broke your leg while skiing so that during your time not on the mountain you could find your passion for writing.
Remembering that everything happens for a reason can get you through the most exciting and most tragic times in your life and will always remind you that happiness can show itself in any situation if you let it. So next time life has you down, pick yourself up, take a deep breath and remember that you are in the right place at the right time and everything happens for a reason.
