The No Make-up Movement

Why it is so important for today's women.

The No Make-up Movement
The Huffington Post

As a woman, it is almost expected that I wear makeup on a daily basis in order to cover up any flaws I may have or think that I have. In a recent movement, celebrities such as Alicia Keys have created a movement called the no make-up movement. It began with Keys posting photos of herself on Instagram not wearing make-up and saying how she feels that a woman should be able to feel comfortable in her own skin.

Following these posts, many other celebrities have joined the cause by posting pictures of themselves without make-up on to support the idea that women should not have to wear make-up to feel pretty. By just being themselves they are beautiful, and this movement has helped many women and girls feel comfortable in their own skin, knowing that they don't need make-up to feel confident about themselves.

The world's changing views on many subjects have made many women feel that they too can change these views on how a woman should look or dress and deviate from centuries-old societal expectations and standards of female beauty.

Recently, I decided to research this topic further and chose to use it for a project in one of my classes. In this project, I plan to take pictures of my friends and classmates when they are not wearing make-up and ask them how they feel about the movement and how it effects their view of themselves when they aren't wearing make-up. Many of the women that I know at my college rarely wear make-up especially to class because they feel that it is unnecessary and that they are there to learn, not to be a model.

There have been complaints about the movement saying that the only reason that celebrities are comfortable with this movement is because they have money to spend on expensive skin-care products that perfect their skin. While this is true, not wearing makeup and properly caring for your skin by washing it and moisturizing can help improve the quality of your skin without the expensive treatments that celebrities receive.

While I still wear make-up around every week, I make sure that I take a few days off to give my skin a break from the make-up, and I use drug store masks to help cleanse my skin to make me feel a little more confident when I'm rocking my no make-up look because I feel like it is important to feel confident in your own skin even if you have flaws.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
