So after the Super Bowl I think everyone can agree that the NFL needs to reevaluate their over time rules. The current rule is the first team to score a touchdown wins the game. They do another coin toss and the team that wins the coin toss always asks to receive the ball and if they score game over. The other team does not even get a chance. We saw this on Sunday when the Super Bowl went into over time and the Patriots won the coin toss and then won the game.
Now I am not an Atlanta Falcon fan in the least but I agree with them in the sense that they got cheated out of the game. They should have had a chance to score as well. In college both teams get a chance and at the end of that if both teams are still tied then they do it all over again. College over time does eventually raise the stakes after the third overtime both teams have to go for two instead of kicking the extra point. The way college does it makes it fair and it does not cheat one team.
I know I am not alone in thinking this. Especially in the Super Bowl the most important football game of the year if in the end it comes to a tie both teams should have an equal chance to possess the ball. There needs to be more fair rules so that we do not have one sided football games. It should not be the luck of a coin toss to decide such a big outcome. These over time rules have been in play for quite some time but I think after this particular incident it might be time for a change.
I know Atlanta should have never allowed the Patriots to come back and even tie the game but they did. I just feel like in the end they should have had a fair chance to possess the ball and finish the game. If the rules had been different the outcome of Super Bowl 51 could have been very different.
