My sororities national philanthropy is Autism Speaks, so when I heard Sesame Street paired with Autism Speaks and was coming out with a new character with Autism, I could not wait to learn more. Without further ado, here is Julia:
Julia is an adorable little character with bright green eyes, orange hair, and yellow skin, although the skin is just a cute little add on for the age of children targeted for the show. The show released Julia as a new character to help raise awareness for Autism and help answer some tricky questions the younger generations may have about Autism, and how to communicate with friends who have the neurological developmental disorder. As defined by Autism Speaks: "Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors."
“The initiative, Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in all Children,” is being used as an educational tool in an online forum as well as print copies and as a free downloadable app in which the Sesame Street characters are teaching the kids about Autism. Throughout the story books several characters explain that Julia "does things a little differently". The storybooks and app also demonstrates how to communicate in a positive effective way with people like Julia, using fewer words and repeating yourself, in a calm, kind tone.
These awesome services and information are not just aimed at the kids though. The initiative came out with something called routine cards. These routine cards are aimed at parents, teachers, helpers, etc. on how to best handle day to day activities for a child with Autism.
With Autism effecting one in 68 children and one in 42 boys within the U.S alone, initiatives like this are long overdue. Autism Speaks, and the Sesame Street initiative is not trying to cure Autism Speaks by any means, but create a world in which people with Autism are better understood.
