Getting To Know Me

My name is Abbey and I'm currently a college freshman at College of Staten Island. I'm a first generation African American young adult. I don't want to say adult because I personally don't feel as though I've experienced life enough to say I'm a full fledge adult. Just because the law states that I am an adult it dictates nothing of my maturity.

I'm majoring in Biology with a concentration in Neuroscience and Business Management. Yes, I know it's a lot, but at the end of it all it will work out. As a first generation student it's hard not to go all out especially with your family constantly breathing down your neck like a pack of hungry wolves waiting for you to stumble. And when you do stumble they pounce on you and point out every single flaw you have. I can't necessarily blame them to be honest as I can understand their anxiety, but they do make my own even worst.

Anyway, I'm new to The Odyssey and I hope that other first timer college students who's experiencing my stresses and joys can relate to me. I know that not everyone reading this will be a first generation and even if you are not I sincerely hope I can help you in any given way. And if I don't end up helping you, I'm sorry, but I did say as to whom my works are going to be geared to.

Just as a briefer, let it be known that I am very opinionated, however I'm not ignorant so I will consider your side of the spectrum if you comment your thoughts. I'm a bit quirky and weird, but loyal to a fault. So thanks for reading and I hope to take you on this great exodus for (hopefully) the next four years.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
