The Music In Your Mind

Music holds power and that power is healing.

The Music In Your Mind
Tyler Beckum

I don't know about the rest of the world, but there always seems to be music in my mind. And it's not just a song stuck in my head, it's a part of my life. Music is such an amazing and empowering tool; you can tell stories, speak your mind and use it to set a mood. Everything about music is so raw and beautiful, even the fluffy pop stuff is important. There isn't a person in the world who hasn't enjoyed music for what it is, in whatever form it might be.

People at churches come together around hymnals, people at concerts come together around their favorite bands and those people come together because of something that band stands for. What's beautiful about music is that people can find those who are similar to them internally even if they are different externally. We go our whole lives looking for people that understand us and can connect with us, music is one of the most effective ways of doing that.

I listen to all kinds of music because I feel that if I can keep an open mind about my music choices, I expose myself to so many stories and in tow so many different people. If I'm driving down the countryside I feel it's fitting to listen to country, it makes me feel happy and limitless. If I'm going on an adventure with my friends we listen to pop/rock, it makes us feel young and invincible. If I'm working out I listen to all sorts of rap, it makes me feel tough and badass. It's a strange thing to think about, but it makes my life make sense.

People look to music for a healing power. It's unexplained and hard to understand but there is something about music that begins to fix whatever is broken inside you. There are so many stories about the way music has changed people's lives. Lupe Fiasco's song Hip Saved My Life is a prime example of that. Whether you use music as a way to make money to change your life or as an outlet for the things that have hurt you, it speaks to you. There might be cure in focusing your feelings into a powerful hook and a couple great verses, not only do you get it out of your system but others can pry inspiration from it.

I think that everyone's life is a series of albums and lyrics. Sometimes they're sad ballads and sometimes they're upbeat anthems, similar to the ups and downs of our lives. I can't go a day without listening to music because everyday is a new day with new events and feelings. Like most people, I associate the music I hear with a memory that drives my emotions towards it. These are the most vivid memories I hold because they mean something more than just a song or an event, they represent something I learned, discovered or treasured.

People walk around with lyrics in there head all of the time, they can memorize the entirety of a Beyonce album before they can recall the quadratic formula. It's simple as to why we memorize what we do, music is powerful, full of emotion and bursting within our DNA. What we choose to listen to is a part of us, it's innate and it's who we are. Music is extremely important for maintaining a place for society to come together. Though it's just a small part of our lives, it has such a large effect on everything within them.

I believe that music is everything.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
