Life is a series of moments that just keep happening, back to back; these moments are different and unique. There are happy moments, sad moments, moments that feel as though they are so fleeting and then there are the moments that last an eternity all on their own. In my astronomy class, I learned how short life truly is, our individual lives are so insignificant in relation to the rest of the universe and since life is so short, for us, each moment needs to be appreciated and never taken for granted.
Obviously the happy moments need to be appreciated because, while they aren’t so rare in our lives that they should be unexpected, being happy is one of the most important things we can do as humans. The sad moments need to be appreciated as well, because they are a beautiful reminder that we still feel, and they help us appreciate the happier moments even more. There are moments where we can feel nothing at all, there doesn’t have to be an emotion associated with it and that in itself can remind us of the simplicity in our lives we are blessed to live. The moments that go by so quickly need to be appreciated so they can be looked back upon and cherished, more attention needs to be paid to these moments.
Most importantly I believe that everyone deserves to have at least one moment where the world stops and everyone should help create that moment for someone else. When our time is as limited as it is, a moment that can last for such a long time is something that cannot be taken for granted. The surrealness of these moments is something that I find somewhat inexplicable, you just kinda know when you’ve had one.
It is a gift that we can affect someone else's life in such a way that the whole world seems to stop for them. In my eyes, it is also a duty we have, we can change people's lives in so many positive ways that it would be rude not to. If you can then you should, if you can make someone's day with a compliment you should, if you can go out of your way to help someone then you should and if you can do something for someone that can make their world stop for a moment then do it.
Service to others doesn't have to be a career choice, it doesn't have to take up your entire life. Service to others is something that can happen on accident, without intention. Being able to make people happy will come when you adopt the idea that other people are just as important, if not more than yourself. I like to think that I have at least tried to think that way.
The joy I get when I can take part in an important part of someone's life, make someone's day or stop someone's world is something that I would highly recommend.
