Human trafficking is the modern-day slavery and one of the fastest growing crimes in the world. For those of you who are unfamiliar with human trafficking, here is a definition:
Human Trafficking: the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.
A lot of people in the United States do not believe that human trafficking is occurring in their own backyards. The common misconception is human trafficking only happens in foreign countries. It happens in foreign countries, but it is happening in American, also.
Sex trafficking can be found as easy as going onto a Craigslist posting, and it often can be found in your region.
Another misconception of human trafficking is it that only happens to women. Sex trafficking can happen to children and men, also.
Common situations where people are trafficked:
- Prostitution by a "pimp"
- Abusive Relationships (ex. domestic violence victims and child abuse)
- Home environments where there is substance abuse
- Runaways
So, my challenge to those reading this article is to research information about human trafficking. Put the hotline number into your cell phones so you can easily report a situation you believe in which someone is being trafficked.
