There are some skeptics out there who believe that global warming is not an actual phenomenon—that it doesn’t exist. Humans are worrying over nothing because global warming is not a threat. However, this isn't the case. Climate change is a serious issue that is occurring now and it’s only getting worse.
Here’s how scientists know it’s happening:
- Since 1960, parts of the Arctic have increased in temperature by 15 degrees, which is causing glaciers to significantly recede.
- The Amazon, where a tenth of the world’s species lives, is struggling to fulfill a task it used to be able to do so well—cleanse the air of harmful carbon and serve as a home to a large range of organisms. Humans are causing deforestation in the Amazon and if you know anything about photosynthesis, you know that plants absorb carbon dioxide and then emit it as oxygen. But without trees and plants, the Amazon can’t get rid of the harmful carbon dioxide in the air, which mostly comes from the burning of fossil fuels, oil, and coal. The more carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, the hotter Earth will be.
- Finally, as reported by Bill Nye, Miami is sinking. Makes sense. Melting glaciers, rising waters.
What can we do about it?
Global warming is a serious threat to our planet and to many, many species, including us. It seems as though scientists have been saying for years that now is the time to do something about climate change, and not everyone takes this seriously. Either they don’t think it’s real or they think that there’s more time. Well, it is real and time has run out. We can no longer fix climate change; however we can try and manage it to prevent worsening conditions.
Here’s what we can do. Instead of relying so heavily on fossil fuels, we can switch to using other resources such as wind, water, and light, which requires no fuel. Think solar panels and wind turbines. Therefore, a vital step you can take is to save your water. Think conservation. There are two main reasons to save water. The first being that by saving water, you are saving energy and a result, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. Secondly, we depend on glaciers for freshwater and with them receding, this may not be an option anymore. Also, use less electricity because it’s produced by the burning of fossil fuels.
Overall, turn off your lights when you’re not in the room, unplug your computer charger when you’re not using it, purchase a reusable water bottle, and get involved—spread the word. There are many simple steps you can take to help lessen the serious issue of global warming. So get on it.
