The Midterm Funk

The disease that's sweeping college campuses across the nation.

The Midterm Funk

It’s the end of September. Classes are in full swing, and you finally have a grasp on the difficulty level of your classes. Then, out of nowhere, all motivation stops. You stop trying to look cute for class (if you ever started), homework goes undone, and fitness plans seem to go out the window. Sound like you? Well, my friend, you have a case of the Midterm Funk. Here are some symptoms of the dreaded epidemic sweeping across campuses nationwide.

1. You have no motivation to do anything whatsoever.

You don't want to study. You don't want do do your homework. You don't even want to go to class. Face it, you're just done with the semester.

2. All you want to do is sleep.

This is normal for any college kid, but about half-way through the semester all you want to do is lay in bed all day.

3. And eat.

When you aren't sleeping, food is always the best option. You'll find yourself taking a trip to the 24/7 McDonald's to use your free coupons.

4. You want to be alone.

On a good day, I don't particularly want to be around a lot of people. After three months of constantly being around people, I don't want to see anyone.

5. You're probably going to get sick.

I don't know if it's the changing weather or the fact that you're around everyone, but you're probably going to be sick. And it's not fun when you're studying for midterms.

6. You will probably freak out.

Midterm means one thing: Midterms. I hope you've been paying attention in your classes.

7. So you decide to watch Netflix instead of studying.

Have a chemistry midterm coming up? What better way to prepare than watching the whole series of Breaking Bad in two nights.

8. You forget what day of the week it is.

The days and nights begin to run together, and you show up for your Monday class only to find out it's Thursday.

9. You get defensive.

Stress can make even the nicest of people mean. Be careful who you talk to at this time; your feelings could be hurt.

10. You start to lose your mind because you never studied for midterms.

You have no idea what difference quotient is or how to find the velocity of two trains going opposite directions if one is carrying a ton of chickens. Why did you sit around and watch Netflix all semester?

11. You cry because you probably failed midterms.

Well, it's only half of your grade, right?

12. You become overjoyed when you realize you didn't fail your midterms.

I'm not sure how exactly you managed to pull that one out of your butt, but congrats. You're motivation has returned, and you promise to study for the rest of the semester...

13. Until you realize that Christmas is only 90 days away.

What is this "study" you speak of? Someone grab the tinsel, Santa is quickly approaching!

If you or a loved one is affected by this epidemic, don't fret. The important thing to remember is that the Midterm Funk is only temporary. The most severe cases end right before finals.

You can and will get through this; I believe in you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
