What To Expect From "The Scorch Trials"

In just a few days, the second film in the "Maze Runner" series, "The Scorch Trials," will be out in theaters. This series by author James Dashner includes a total of four books, discussing the trials of several young adults, as they are pawns in a nation-wide scientific experiment. It is set in the future, when the sun has scorched the earth and disease is running rampant throughout the world.

Not only does the Maze Runner series have a very unique and intriguing plot, the casting done in the film adaptions is amazing. Dylan O’Brien is about as swoon-worthy as they come, not to mention the phenomenal way he portrays the character of Thomas. Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, and Ki Hong Lee (who play Newt, Teresa, and Minho) will also be reappearing for the sequel, where there’s not doubt that they will create an outstanding performance once again. Among the familiar faces, there will be a few new characters thrown in the mix for "The Scorch Trials." Before going into the Scorch, Thomas and the Gladers will meet Janson, played by Aiden Gillan. Other important characters include Brenda (portrayed by actress Rosa Salazar) and Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito), who Thomas, Newt, Minho, and Teresa will meet while they are in The Scorch.

The second novel/film of the series is quite different than the first. There is no maze to decode and there is no more Glade. The characters are thrown into the real world. They face and endure the struggles of the earth, or what is left of it. The sun has scorched the land and it is in what could be described as post-apocalyptic conditions. Not only that, but there is a disease called The Flare spreading flagrantly among the people. They still have no idea what WICKD (or WICKED) is or what it does. All they know is that the WICKD scientists were the ones who threw them into the maze, and that makes them the enemy. They will try at all costs to get out of whatever WICKD has planned, even if that means dying in The Scorch.

Not too much more can be explained for fear that the book and the upcoming film are completely different. From simply viewing the trailer (about 57 times), it seems like the movie adaption is taking on a rather different view of James Dashner’s original novel. While it seems that the general idea is still there, there seems to be changes in the pivotal plot points that were written in the book. Not too much can be presupposed, because after all, it is just the trailer. But however similar or different the film is, there is no doubt that it will be just as (or maybe more) thrilling than the book itself, but it will be interesting to see just how closely relate the two mediums are. The one thing we can count on for sure is that the Cranks (people who have lost their minds to The Flare virus) will be just as creepy as Dashner wrote them.

For any "Maze Runner" fans out there (or even if you’ve never even hear of this series) a cartoon was created to help explain the Flare virus that James Dashner created for the series. It is basically an informational video for the people living in the time of The Scorch and simultaneously a way to propagate WICK (WICKED). The link is provided for you to get an idea of what exactly the Gladers are up against in the Scorch. And remember, WICKED is good.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
