Since Donald Trump’s inauguration, he has left scientists with their mouths’ gaping.
Trump has authorized further construction of the Dakota Access and Keystone XL Pipelines that were previously halted by President Obama. He has mentioned time and time again that he does not believe in climate change, even though NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association confirmed that 2016 was the hottest year in recorded history. President Trump banned the EPA, National Park System, as well as the Department of Interior, Agriculture, and Health and Human Services from releasing any type of current media, updates to the public, and communication with journalists. In addition, the president’s recent ban on Muslim immigration has prevented scientists from either leaving or entering the country, potentially causing them to lose their jobs and miss out on break-through research opportunities.
Trump’s hasty decisions have sparked scientists from all over the nation to unite and create a march for science in Washington, D.C.. Their mission statement goes as follows:
“THE MARCH FOR SCIENCE CHAMPIONS PUBLICLY FUNDED AND PUBLICLY COMMUNICATED SCIENCE AS A PILLAR OF HUMAN FREEDOM AND PROSPERITY. WE UNITE AS A DIVERSE, NONPARTISAN GROUP TO CALL FOR SCIENCE THAT UPHOLDS THE COMMON GOOD, AND FOR POLITICAL LEADERS AND POLICYMAKERS TO ENACT EVIDENCE-BASED POLICIES IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST.”This march is not only limited to scientists. It invites people of all races, genders, religions, economic statuses, sexual orientations, and political views who share a love for science. The march will be a place where people from all walks of Earth can come together to show their support for our Earth, its sustainability, and its future.This is not just a march.
