The Magical Teachings of Yoga
Merina Khan

My yoga journey started when I was an anxiety-filled teenager. One day, my sister and I stumbled upon a yoga teacher on YouTube named Sadi Nardini. Watching her do yoga so fluidly in each posture while remaining balanced truly inspired my sister and me both. I admired her strength and balance so much that I wanted to move like that. My sister and I began dedicating every day to practicing yoga, which, at first, was a little rocky. Eventually, my body became open and limber; in time, I started building strength and flexibility.

It made me feel empowered, as if I could push my body to do things I could never imagine. I could do headstands and I could balance my entire body on my hands, doing all kinds of postures. However, I couldn't do any of that without centering my balance and evening my breath. Yoga, to me, wasn’t only about building strength and flexibility, though; it was a practice that taught me to breathe and show gratitude to the world around me.

My mindset about my surroundings and my own self became more positive. As my yoga practice continued to grow, so did I. I created an inner and outer strength like no other. Yoga taught me how to self-love and how to take time out of my hectic life to focus on myself. I would practice daily, whether it was ten minutes or two hours. Yoga eventually became a lifestyle for me! I started eating more consciously and thinking more graciously of my surroundings and myself. Self-love became very important along my journey. I started to recognize the necessity to take time for myself in order to be happier.

I learned with yoga that breath is so important in every task. Inhaling and exhaling is a task we don't even think about, but once we learn to control it, doing hard tasks seem easier. I've noticed when I am in an uncomfortable or hectic situation if I remember to just breathe and relax, I can overcome that situation. Eventually, I started doing yoga outside of my room and with other yogis. I found out that there is this giant open-loving community of yogis from all over. Yoga has taught me to have gratitude and become a healthier and happier person. It has also introduced me to a variety of amazing people who have taught me in so many ways. Yoga is an art and a lifestyle that has shaped so many lives.

When the breath wanders, the mind also is unsteady. But, when the breath is calmed, the mind, too, will be still, and the yogi achieves long life. Therefore, one should learn to control the breath.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
