It was about nine years ago when I saw "Hot Rod." My life instantly started revolving around any opportunity I could sneak a quote into a conversation or convince someone to chant with me like Rod and Kevin do in the film. I watched it enough to have memorized every line of dialogue and pick up from any point. This was the first time I was exposed to "The Lonely Island."
For any friend of mine that hangs out with me semi-frequently, I totally understand if you're rolling your eyes. I have not stopped talking about this comedy trio for weeks and I'm sure you're sick of me singing the "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" soundtrack or talking about my undying love for Jorma, but I can't get enough.
Since I was 15 I have wanted nothing more than to be adopted by this group of oddball guys or somehow creep my way into one of their music videos. They're crass and vulgar and disgusting, but undeniably good for society. Why? Because they produce what they want.
I have wanted to be like these guys for as long as I can remember. I've seen "Awesometown" and "The 'Bu," and just about every interview Jorma, Akiva or Andy have given. They are unapologetic and not concerned with what they audience thinks of them and it's just so refreshing.
I have seen "Popstar" in theater four times now, and the sparkle hasn't dulled a bit. It was dumb, but in a clever way, hiding its best jokes from the trailer and leaving subtle comments from the characters as the most laugh out loud hilarious moments. This is a damn good movie, and one I wish has done better in the box office, only because those guys deserve for it to have.
I've seen the videos of Jorma dancing in front of the SNL stage to various musical guests, and watched Akiva and Andy go wild on Jimmy Fallon's stage for "I'm on a Boat." I memorized "Spring Break Anthem" and planned my Halloween costume around being the Style Boyz. I followed their writing credits and every guest role they've ever done for a T.V. show. As much as I love Death Cab For Cutie, this is the first time I've felt attached to each member in a group, like they're dear old friends I can't fathom moving away from. These guys have made me laugh harder than anyone ever has and lit a flame under me in a way I don't think anyone else ever could.
I hope one day I can swim out to my own lonely island, and make people happy the way these guys have. I hope one day I can make political statements shrouded in gross jokes and win a Grammy for my insane songs about some preferably untouched subjects. I hope one day I can do for society what "The Lonely Island" has, and be genuine — genuinely original, genuinely friends with the people I work with, and genuinely hilarious.
Thanks guys, can't wait to giggle nonstop at two in the morning over your next video.
