'The Lion Guard:' Hurting My Inner Child

Differences between 'The Lion King' and 'The Lion Guard' franchises.

I understand what you were trying to do: you were trying to bring something to the newer generations. As much as I love "The Lion King," "The Lion Guard" has broke me. I have watched a few episodes while babysitting my nieces, and seeing how much the art style, voices and even characters' personalities are enough for me to say that this reboot probably did not need to happen. I do, however, appreciate the lessons that this show is teaching younger viewers, teamwork being the big one. I know not everyone feels this way, but these are just a few things I have noticed that are way different, and just make me not appreciate the show as much.

1. Art Style Changes

I want to start out by discussing the art style changes. Oh my gosh, are those extremely obvious to me. Personally, I think Kiara, Simba, Timon, Pumbaa, Rafiki and Nala are the only characters that even come close to looking like what they did in the movies. I understand the point was to teach younger children and entertain them, but this is how I feel with a lot of shows getting reboots these days. Even with those characters looking similar, I can still see the many differences in animation.

Nala:

Kiara:

Simba:

Timon and Pumbaa:

Rafiki:

I did not include the main character, Kion, because he was not in the previous franchises. I am not a huge fan of the new art style, and I wish for many of the animals they would've kept it the same, especially for Fuli. Fuli is a cheetah and a member of the lion guard. Compared to the other animals on the show, she is the one that looks the strangest to me. Although we never seen a cheetah in "The Lion King" movies, I feel like this is not a good representation.

The animation could've been so much better.

2. Voice Changes

Alright, before I get into this: I am well aware that people may not have wanted to come back to voice the characters they may have voiced for "The Lion King" movies. What bothers me is some of the voices sound like little to no effort was put in to try and make them sound similar; Kiara's voice especially. Kiara's voice used to be much smoother singing, but in "The Lion Guard" I just can't stand the voice. It's not just her voice that changed. To show how each character's voice may have changed, I found clips from "The Lion King" and "The Lion Guard" of Hakuna Matata performances.

Now here is the old one:

It just drives me nuts how big the voice differences are. I know that you probably tried to get them as close to the original as possible, but I think it could've been done better. There are voices on the show that I absolutely love hearing whether they are singing or not, and there are some I just can't take. I know this is different for everyone. I can only take Bunga's, the honey badger, voice for so long before I just want to change the channel. Sadly, I couldn't do that to my nieces. They love the show and I didn't want them getting mad with me.

3. Personality Changes.

Finally is how the attitudes of the characters have changed, Simba, Nala and Kiara's mainly. In "The Lion King" movies, Simba was more of a carefree person, but knew when he had to take charge, while in "The Lion Guard" he is more uptight. I feel he is stricter with Kion than he was with Kiara in the movies. It's like having a second cub just completely changed him. Kiara has also become a little more stuck up than she was in "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride." I think that this is understandable though, because in the movie she was an only child, and now she has a younger brother; she is just being a typical older sister. I will admit, they get along a lot better than many TV siblings do. I also have to take into account that her friends can have influence on how her behavior changes. In the episode "Just can't wait to be Queen," her friends ended up becoming her assistants in a sense, and she picked up on the snobby behaviors of her friends. This is typical of anyone, and I am glad that they actually made a lesson out of it. I think Nala changed the least out of all of them, but she still has changed. She is supportive of Simba and her cubs, she helps not only them but others get through hard times, and she knows what to say when. Personally, her personality changed for the better compared to "The Lion King'' movies.

Although this is a kids' show, adult viewers still will be watching. It hurts us to see something we care about so much be taken in a completely different direction. I appreciate some of the aspects of the show, but I do not appreciate how much change has come to it. Like a lot of reboots, I sadly have to say that I do not like it, and it should just stop.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
