What a beautiful day to be frolicking through the leaves with my squirrel-squad. Each day in Athens, Ga. is full of new and exciting trees to climb, students to watch, and nuts to scavenge after. For us squirrels, with a campus this large, the world is our acorn. It’s a good life, as a University of Georgia squirrel -- most of the time.
We enjoy spending our mornings scampering around North campus, bothering the famed “North Campus Cat.” None of us are really quite sure why he is so popular. I mean, his tail isn’t even fuzzy like ours. As the morning wears on and the students become more prevalent around campus, we either make ourselves scarce (hanging out in trees or poking around in the bushes), or we enjoy darting in and around the students, freaking them out about how much confidence we have around them. They always seem so taken aback by our people skills; we have seen millions of you over the years -- we are far from afraid. Sorry not sorry frat stars, but we were here first. This is our turf.
Ugh, Saturday’s in Athens are the worst. Game days are so loud and hectic -- the whole city is buzzing with excitement, enthusiasm, and alcohol. Though I hate having to hide in a hole when the chapel bells rings constantly after a Bulldawg win, finding little fallen morsels of popcorn and drips of Bud Light are a nice treat.
The students… yeah, you people are a little obnoxious. Nevertheless watching you all frantically navigate the campus half-exhausted and half-hungover on a daily basis is very entertaining. We have heard and see it all. Yeah, we know you shacked two nights in a row. And yeah, we know you had Snapchatted that old high school boyfriend of yours. We know all your dirty little secrets. Maybe that is why its so frustrating when you people look at us, smile and say, “OMG, look at that cute little chipmunk!” Let me just tell you, there is nothing more offensive in the world than being mistaken for one of those beasts. We take the time to learn about you, the least you could do is know what species we are.
While it definitely has its downsides, as you can see, life is pretty sweet for us squirrels living life in The Classic City.
