The Life Of A College Student

It's okay to slow down.

The Life Of A College Student
Emily Mattice

It is currently 5:07 in the morning on a Thursday night and I am yet to get an ounce of sleep..well I guess it is Friday morning now. I thought that I came into to college super prepared mentally and physically and damn was I wrong. It might be the poor choice in choosing to have 8:00 AM classes four times a week or maybe the fact that I just genuinely didn't know what I was in for. I met up with a sophomore on campus a few days ago, and she asked me, "are you sleeping?" Of course I responded yes because I technically was getting sleep, just not a whole lot of it. I called my mom a few days ago and said, "you know what this is hard, this whole college thing is not all it's cracked up to be." Being a mother, she proceeded to tell me for the hundredth time..."just get it done and over with now." Theoretically, she is not wrong. I cannot even fathom of going back to school as an adult (not like the 18 year old adult, but the real deal). RESPECT to those people, though. Any who, I just thought I would share what my typical day looks like and maybe some people will send some prayers my way? It would be much appreciated it...

7:00 AM

My phone rings that obnoxious noise that I seem to be too lazy to fix. I drag my exhausted self out of bed and try to make myself look what somewhat presentable to make for the bags under my eyes.

8:00 - 9:30 AM

For an hour an a half, I get to sit and listen about stoichiometry, quantum numbers, conceptual thinking and all the over fun subjects in Chemistry. I force myself to sit in the front row so that 1. I don't fall asleep and 2. I don't fall asleep. I like to think it makes me look studious but I probably just look like the typical nerd.

9:40 - 11:10 AM

Guess what I get to do? Yep. That's right, you guessed it! I get to sit through another lecture. My english class kind of intimidates me because there are only a few freshman so I'm typically pretty quiet and try to pay attention but I get distracted since she goes off topic so quickly.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Since my breakfast typically consists of coffee and maybe a croissant here and there, I try to actually eat some food of substance before I get hangry.

*NAP TIME*

2:00 - 6:00 PM

Homework!!!

6:15 - 7:15 PM

I typically have been pretty good about working out since I got here because you know what the rumor is...freshman 15!

7:30 - 8:00 PM

Either eats a super healthy dinner or indulges (oops)!

*SHOWER*

8:30 PM - 12:00 AM

....more homework!!!

12:00 - 12:30 AM

This is probably the worst part of the day because that nap I took early, is not letting me sleep. So this is the time I usually contemplate ordering Insomnia Cookies and just decide why not do more homework that I didn't finish!

12:30 - 3:30 AM

I attempt to get organized or get ahead somehow, but typically realize that I'm still confused on the concepts in chemistry and calculus that we learned a week ago.

3:30 AM - ....AM?

Sometimes I just feel like why bother sleeping? I will be more tired if I only get a few hours and I will unfortunately not be able to drag myself to my 8:00 AM chemistry class. So this is where I am now. I watched an episode of Criminal Minds, edited a few possible insta-worthy pictures, and wondered how even though I am insanely busy and overwhelmed, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Now I know it sounds like I am complaining, but to be completely honest, college was nothing like high school. The classes are 10x harder, there aren't enough hours in the day, but I guess that's college. College takes grit. So if you are a college student or you see a college student, be nice to them because they are most likely very stressed.

"Sometimes the greatest dreams are the ones your heart fears."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
