The millennial generation has revamped the LGBTQ movement and the Civil Rights movement, both of which were introduced in the 70s. Our generation has decided to compare them in order to emphasize the need for equality in our broken world.
The LGBTQ community doesn’t want to be discriminated against because of their sexuality. African Americans don't wish for their skin to be a determinant for their success, place in society, or their humanity.
While they both want to stand on common ground, it's been argued they are actually not similar.
Some members of the LGBTQ community see themselves as an “invisible” minority, stating that because they are oppressed for their sexuality, they should be considered a minority.
For POC (people of color), this notion is disrespectful.
Although the LGBTQ community has experienced ridicule, discrimination and many hate crimes, no one has suffered as much as POC. In fact, homosexuality is a more widely accepted construct than black people, brown people or even Hispanics.
People fear us simply because of our skin color, and we’ve been getting killed every day since it was decided we were inferior.
We’ve been sprayed down outside of public places with water hoses that seemingly "removed" our scummy skin.
Our cultures are constantly being humiliated and appropriated, and we are constantly discriminated against because of our refusal to conform to societies expectations.
I have no personal malice towards the LGBTQ community, but until they are targeted for having a particular skin color, they are not considered a “minority.”
To tie the knot even tighter, the Gay Rights movement is about "acceptance of a social behavior," whereas the Civil Rights Movement was about gaining voting rights, public accommodations, proper school funding for minority schools, etc., and gender equality.
Homosexuals do not fit the description of an ethnic group, and gender equality was gained for them during the Civil Rights struggle. The rights and acceptance they claim to fight for has already been given to them.
As stated before, people are more accepting of the LGBTQ struggle than the minorities who were a part of the civil rights movement. Any footage from the Civil Rights movement will exhibit excessive violence and aggression. This happens very minimally in gay pride parades.
Most of the hate and violence which occurs generally comes from the people who are opposing them. These people are called bigots or homophobes. However, the truth is some people aren’t even protesting gays themselves because they couldn't care less about who they sleep with.
These opposers just don’t want the LGBTQ’s lifestyle imposed on them.
Nonetheless, there is a huge difference concerning the fight for rights as a gay person, and the fight for rights as a POC.
POC have no choice in letting everyone know their skin is different. It’s a horrific reality that exists day in day out, knowing they are targets.
Therefore, the Civil Rights movement is not synonymous to the LGBT movement. They should instead focus on their own movement.
