The official game trailer for "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" premiered on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo held in Los Angeles, California. This highly anticipated Nintendo video game is expected to be released in early 2017.
The trailer featured a number of mechanics and stylistic choices that will be new to the Zelda franchise, including an open-world map and character voice acting. "Breath of the Wild" will follow the series' recurring hero, Link, as he conquers mysterious enemies on his quest to save Hyrule. Watch the official trailer below.
The video game was originally announced in 2013 by producer Eiji Aonuma and set to be released for the Nintendo Wii U during 2015. After difficulties with the game's physics engine, Nintendo delayed its release date to 2017 and announced that the game would be compatible with both the Wii U and Nintendo's newest video game console, the NX.
Since the trailer's initial debut, fans have been vocal about the upcoming game on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. A significant controversy arose when Aonuma explained why the newest game would not feature Link as a female protagonist.
"We thought about it and decided that if we're going to have a female protagonist it's simpler to have Princess Zelda as the main character," Aonuma explained to GameSpot at E3 2016. "If we have Princess Zelda as the main character who fights, then what is Link going to do?"
Fans of the franchise responded negatively to this report, claiming Aonuma's statement didn't validate the decision. Blogger Jessica Lanchel responded in a web article on The Mary Sue.
"Considering most Zelda stories are non-gender-specific anyway (and given Link’s often much-parodied androgynous appearance), how much effort would it really take to build a female hero, someone that isn’t just head-canonically female but actually female?" she wrote.
"Breath of the Wild" will be the first Zelda game in history to feature voice acting throughout the game. The protagonist, however, will remain mute. Aonuma explained why in his GameSpot interview.
"If Link said something the user doesn't agree with, that relationship between the user and Link would be lost," Aonuma says.
