Anyone who has ever experienced Ryann late at night when she is getting tired knows…I get weird. I am sure you are curious as to what I mean by weird, and I mean I get super goofy and go off on tangents. For a long time I did not understand why I was the only one who was subject to having extremely random thoughts and giggle fits right before bed. But I have found my match. If anyone were to listen to the conversations between my roommate and I while we are lying in bed at night, would be thoroughly entertained.
Due to my great generosity, I have decided to give you a sneak peak into the greatest show to hit televisions everywhere since Friends… The Late Night Show With Kim & Ryann.
Our conversations have gone a little something like this…
Topic 1: Brain Transplant
I was working on a project in anatomy about brain AVMs and discovered that they can be removed surgically. I was discussing with Kim about my discovery and was relating it to my sister’s situation when I came up with the idea of a brain transplant. Kim reminded me that it was practically impossible since you would also have to remove and replace the spinal cord which would essentially kill the patient. This revelation came upon us when we thought about its possibility…
If you received a brain donation, would you take on the personality and knowledge of the individual who donated their brain?
Or
Would you start over completely fresh as though you were an infant again?
[This led us into…]
Topic 2: Instincts in Infants
Kim: Did you know that when you place an infant on their stomach in your palm they instinctively start making motions as though they were swimming in water, kicking their feet and flailing their arms? And if you put your finger in the palm of their hand when open, they will close their fist over your hand.
This sparked the conversation in which my brain went to a totally different level of crazy….
I commented to Kim that it would be crazy if the brain was more advanced as an infant rather than growing with time. It would be quite a revelation to find out that as a baby we knew more than we do now and that with time we forget everything we knew. I mean as we get older how many of us remember the first time we walked, or the first day of school, or what we had for dinner on November 22nd 2004? Almost none of us. As we get older, we become less aware of occurrences on specific dates and specific times. So why would it not be possible that we knew more as a baby than we do now and we just forgot about it with age? Or maybe the level of our knowledge is always in equilibrium because we learn new things everyday but forget more and more everyday.
As much as I know you are enjoying our first episode and want to know what Instincts to Infants led into, you will have to tune in next week to Episode II :)
