Music is important. It's this broad, unexplainable phenomenon in our culture. Humans are cool and all, but we in no way deserve the beauty that music provides. It's pure magic. It's a big ole mystery that our feeble minds can't understand, so we just sit back and enjoy it. Music is also a lot like people- it's diverse and never the same twice. That's why it's bizarre of us to judge each other for what we listen to.
Pop music is growing and expanding right now, and people love it. However, some people prefer listening to obscure tunes, and that can sometimes get them some pretty hefty judgment. There seems to be a stigma that if you listen to music that most people have never heard of, you're probably a presumptuous wannabe hipster. That's ridiculous! Now, I'm sure there are people out there who listen to certain artists for the sake of sounding indie and cool, but who are we to decide who they are?
This also works vice versa. Sometimes people who listen to more exotic music tend to criticize pop lovers by labeling them as brainless and mainstream. So what? Mainstream may work for some people. If you jam to JB or Ariana, good for you! That's what you enjoy and that's the "music to your ears", so stick with it. There shouldn't be judgement for enjoying what's on the radio more.
Music isn't regional, either. I've lived in Texas my entire life, and can count on one hand the country songs that I like. My Spotify is filled with Arctic Monkeys, Frank Sinatra, Chance the Rapper, and even some Meghan Trainor, but I still tend to steer clear of the country genre. And guess what? That's perfectly ok! Music is everywhere, and thanks to the internet, we can get any kind of music anywhere in the world. If you live in Florida and jam to Indian folk music, do it! If you live in New York City and prefer honky tonk, go for it. Music is for everyone, and there should be no judgments.
I know it's a cliche straight out of a song, but music makes the world go 'round. We all appreciate it. It's as necessary to us as food and water is. It's one of the things that ties us all together, and there's plenty of strife in the world without criticizing others for what they listen to. Music is universal and vital to our well being. Music is used in therapy for the sick, as a way to tell someone how you feel about them, for dance parties at 3 a.m., and for making movies way better. It's against our nature to judge someone's choice in music. It's the thread that holds us together, and it's time we start treating it as such. So happy listening everyone, and enjoy what you choose, no matter what.
