Late February to mid-March means only one thing to Houstonians: The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. The Houston Rodeo is huge and one of the most fun experiences you will ever have. If you haven't been to the rodeo, you should get your tickets and go!
The Livestock
Going to the Rodeo is my favorite thing because I love to see all the animals. Students and families raise animals to showcase and it is so much fun to see horses, cows, sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, basically every and any animal at the Rodeo. Heck, we even have camel rides at the Rodeo. The Rodeo provides interactive exhibits about the animals that are showcased and it is really fun and educational. Plus, if you stop by the nursery area, you can see baby animals and they are just too cute!
The Rides
The Rodeo also has a huge carnival to entertain guests as they wait for the rodeo and concert to start in the late afternoon. Some of the craziest rides I have ever been on were at the Rodeo! There are huge slides, multiple ferris wheels, fun houses, rigged carni games, and great roller coasters. Some people even buy tickets just to go to the carnival all day and have a good time with friends and family!
The Food
The best food and the best way to clog your arteries. Basically, how rodeo food works is if they can fry it, it's served at the rodeo. Twinkies? Fried. Oreos? Fried. Bacon? Also Fried. And if it's not fried, it's on a stick. We got Tater Twisters, pizza on a stick, corn on the cob, cheesecake on a stick, and fried gator. It's all fried, on a stick, or both. The food is one of the many (if not my main) reason why I go to the rodeo. I'd rather spend my money on food than the carnival tickets anyway.
The Shops
If you ever just wanted to drop money on cowboy things like ropes, cowboy hats, bedazzled shirts, go to the rodeo. Once again, I'm gonna sound like a broken record, but everything and anything is sold at the Rodeo. Once year my parents came back from the Rodeo and they bought that fancy Tempurpedic bed that can change the elevations of both sides of the bed. I know right?
Mutton Bustin
One of the best and cutest events that happens at the Rodeo. Every night a group of toddlers try and ride sheep from one part of the arena to the other. A helmet is strapped on and all they have to is hold on tight and don't fall off! It sounds really stupid, and it kinda is, but the kids love it and the winner even gets a prize!
Wagon Races
Yup, even wagon races can have a little excitement! Kroger, Wells Fargo, Ford, and Chevron are a few major donors that are represented in the Wagon races throughout the rodeo season. Most of the fun comes from betting on which wagon with your friends, but this season wagon racing got a little dangerous. Did you hear about the guy who recently was thrown off his wagon and a wild wagon ran around the arena? Here's the link to the video if you'd like to watch! The man gets thrown off the yellow wagon around 0:53 in the video.
The Actual Rodeo
I don't even know where to begin. From start to finish the Rodeo is jam packed with incredible stunts and action. During the National Anthem a women does tricks on a horse with sparklers, there's bareback racing, bull riding, the rodeo clowns are some of the best people in the arena, and
The Concert
It is one of the biggest honors to be invited to perform at the Houston Rodeo. Legends such as George Straight, Selena, and Whitney Houston have performed at the Rodeo. The great thing about the concerts at the Rodeo is that they vary and have country, R&B, rock, and pop artist perform so everyone can have a great time during the Rodeo season. Pretty much 90 percent of the concerts I've attended have been at the Rodeo.
