The Hanover College Starter Pack

Welcome to Hanover College! We are excited to have you! The school year is just about to start and just like every school has their school supplies lists, so does Hanover. As you are off to college there are other recommendations such as toiletries, bedding and of course your clothes and other goodies. Because Hanover College is special and many consider it as its own little community, we would like to share another small list of things to bring along with you as you spend the next chapter of your life here! Hanover is more of an outdoors campus so the Hanover College Starter Pack may be a little different compared to other colleges, but that's what makes Hanover so special. As you are beginning to pack up and head to Hanover, read through the Hanover College Starter Pack and pack the following!

The Rain Gear Bundle

Winter, spring, summer or fall you can expect a least one day of rain in Hanover, Indiana. Some days it’ll rain more than others. I highly suggest you invest in ‘The Rain Gear Bundle’. This includes a pair of rain boots, a rain coat, an umbrella- heck bring a boat while you’re at it!

Golf Club

Golf club? Well welcome to Hanover! A place where students play a game called ‘campus golf’ all afternoon. Campus golf is similar to golf expect there aren’t preset targets around campus. It’s a make-it-up-as-you-go kind of game. It’s a fun stress reliever so bring your golf club(s)!

Hammock

If you’ve ever been on Hanover College’s campus, a lot of you would agree with the fact that its one of the most beautiful campuses you’d ever stepped foot on! The scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Hanover’s ‘The Point’ view overlooks the Ohio River. There are a ton of trees around campus that provide perfect shade on beating hot afternoon. What’s a better place for a hammock than around a whole bunch of tress? Do you want that peaceful and relaxing time under the shade while doing a homework assignment? Bring your hammock!

Hiking Shoes

There are a total of four marked hiking trails on/near Hanover’s campus. There’s the Crowe Valley Trial, the Happy Valley Trail, the hike to Buddha’s Belly and the hike to the acre. Hiking is something just about every Hanover College student does and I highly recommend it! Not only is it great exercise, but it’s a great way to get away from the academic and social stress. Its amazing how one can wonder around, hiking yet find themselves, answer some personal questions and just relax and relieve some stress. Bring your hiking shoes, go out and you’re your heart away!

Sports Jersey

Have a favorite sports team? Pack yourself a sports jersey! Another Hanoverian pastime is attending a good ole jersey themed party! Go out and have that college experience while reppin’ your favorite sports team!

Tank Top and Shorts

Do you ever get to that frustrating moment when its ten minutes until class starts and you’ve been through four different outfits? Well just like you and a lot of students, picking out an outfit for the day can be hard and can get super frustrating. But on a hot sunny day, especially during May Term (Hanover’s third trimester in the spring), you can find the majority of Hanover students wearing the simple and comfy tank top and shorts outfit. This outfit makes class(es) comfy and also prepares yourself for a nice, comfy afternoon out in the sun while you do homework and study or take a break from that enjoy a nice game of campus golf, hike, sand volleyball, etc!

Roller Skates, Skateboards, Bike, etc.

If you couldn’t tell, Hanoverians are very outdoorsy people. Many students ride their bikes and skateboards to class or just out around campus. There are also students who will rollerblade around campus or grab a tandem bike and ride around campus with some friends. Come bring your roller skates, skateboard, or bike and ride along!

Wiffleball Skills

The Lambda Chi Alpha chapter at Hanover College hosts a wiffleball tournament every May Term as a fundraiser for their philanthropy. Just about everyone on campus joins in, participates, and supports! It’s a fun after class activity that lasts all night. Bring your wiffleball skills to the field and come out and join in on the fun!

School Spirit

This one’s easy to pack! It takes up no room in your car or in your suit case, only in your heart! Bring your school spirit with you! A lot of our students are involved in one or more organizations, clubs, sports and arts and we all love to support them all! We take pride and joy in everyone of our students and their talents. Join in on the pride and joy and bring your school spirit along with you while you’re at it!!!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
