Let talk about rape.

The very concept is truly reprehensible, and trying to define it is equally as loathsome. So, what exactly is it? What does the word really mean? The answers are far and wide exceedingly unclear to a majority of people. Most categorize this disgraceful violation as being an individual that has been attacked and forced into sexual intercourse. So, in a vast world of gray, is there only a black or white that constitutes or “qualifies” as rape?

You wake up feeling awkwardly disgusted and completely confused, and you know something's not right. Your start asking yourself, "Was that a dream?" "Did I let something happen?" Bits and pieces continue to replay in your mind and consume your thoughts adding to an unwaveringly horrible feeling that you've been violated. Did he? NO, absolutely not. Nothing could possibly have happened because I know I said no. Please let that have been a dream. There’s no way he would do that. He’s not that kind of guy.

This miserably confusing scenario happens — more than anyone would like to admit. Welcome to the overly populated, heavily underestimated gray area. A place where even the victims themselves question if their violation was valid or not. They know they don’t feel right about what happened to them, even if they can only hazily recall in between the "no's" and the “I don’t want this."

The word is coercion, and it means to continually try to convince someone that they want something when they obviously don’t. Coercion, in any state of mind, is not acceptable but even more so in an altered state. If you know that in the light of day, under normal circumstances, that you would have never consented to any such acts, then why on earth would you in an altered state? The state where even if the initial intent was there, or if someone is under the influence or even physically exhausted and passed out, their body belongs to them — period. The end. Everything stops the moment the word "no" comes up, and if it doesn't, it is a violation. If someone is clearly saying "no" and still being coerced, they are being violated. No means no means no!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
