When you go to school upstate, you learn to get used to the cold, dreary weather 95% of the time. The winter drags on for what feels like 2 years at a time. Once february comes around, everyone is constantly checking the weather for signs of Spring. When the weather app says it 50º you can finally turn to your friends and say "it's going to be so warm tomorrow!", you have to figure out how you're going to spend your time in the warmth. Here are some ideas of what you could do when it finally gets warm on campus.

1. Take the long way

You know how long it takes you to get to class, and you know all the shortcuts to avoid the cold. But when it's warm, you want to spend as much time outside as possible before being stuck in class, so you go around the long way to find the best sun spots and the most people outside.

2. People watch

If you're excited to go sit outside and enjoy the warmth, odds are other people are emerging from their midwinter hibernations and doing the same thing. There will likely be lots of types of people out and about on the first few warm days. You can probably find lots of interesting activities going on, and some of them are bound to be humorous!

3. Play with puppies

When there're more people outside, there is going to be more furry friends outside too. Even if you're already in a good mood because the sun is out, you can be even happier to find an excess of little fur babies outside who are just as excited to see you as you are to see them.

4. Exercise

Whether you want to go for a run, or play sports with friends between classes, as soon as it gets nice, your mood will be improved and you'll feel like you are ready to conquer anything. This could definitely help with that diet you wanted to try since January.

5. Study outside

If you have to be studying, why not kill two birds with one stone and enjoy the sun at the same time. Being stuck inside can make it so much harder to comprehend what you read when all you want to do is be enjoying one of the few warm days of the month.

6. Eat something refreshing

You know you feel better when you're eating a refreshing ice cream or even a large iced tea from your on-campus coffee shop. You need something to refresh your soul and your mouth. When it's nice out, do as they say and TREAT YO SELF!

7. Sunbathe

If you don't have anything else to do in the sun, just take some time to enjoy the beauty of nature and the warmth of the sun on your face. Maybe if you've been blessed with tan genes unlike myself, you'll even get some color on your winter-white skin.

8. Break out summer clothes

You know you have a collection of clothes you look forward to wearing when the weather gets warmer again. These are your cutest and lightest clothes, and you can't wait to break them out of the back of your closet again and show off your ankles again(GASP).

9. Open all the windows

Your dorm room has been stuffy and dry for months, so on the first warm day, of course, you're going to open the windows as wide as possible and let all the warm air and sunlight flood into your room.

Make sure you enjoy the first warm days of the semester because you know they may not come very often. Take advantage of all the best things to do in the warm and sunny days when you can't figure out what else to do with yourself. I know I'm personally going to enjoy as many early days as I can of "Springhamton" 2017.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
