The Fight for Women's Rights

Recently there has been a lot of tension and fear in our country about women’s rights with Donald Trump as our new president. I normally stay away from political topics for my articles, but I began commenting on a post someone had left on face book about this issue and talked to them, while gaining their opinion. I know there are many voices out there waiting to be heard. This voice was eager, so I thought the best thing to do would be to share this person’s voice in this week’s article. Something that I enjoy doing with my writing, is making voices heard. Our interview went like this:

Karen: I dislike the idea of a group of middle aged men telling women what to do with their bodies and shaming them for choices. It makes me sick.

Me: Why does It make you sick? And where did you see the men making the choices? Do you have anything that you can cite from online? (I like to ask specific questions for writing).

Karen: Oh absolutely!

Well, with the recent administration moving to de-fund Planned Parenthood and cutting off funding for International Abortion assistance, CNN is on a constant loop at my work and on the screen, I saw a small blurb that says "Pence says Life is Winning again in America"

and I find it hypocritical of him to say that considering all the people he and the rest of the people he and the administration will put in jeopardy with the new orders.

Me: Are they cutting off all funding for abortion assistance?

Karen: I think just international.

Karen had sent me a link talking about the abortion issue.

Me: I was concerned myself about trump making abortion illegal and someone told me that he wouldn't. But I never realized how many lives that cutting off international funding would really affect. I never knew this much about it, thank you for sharing with me.

Karen: You bet! Even if it never becomes illegal, cutting off access and endangering the quality can be just as bad, if not worse. And what scares me too, Planned Parenthood is also used for Ovarian Cancer screenings, Pap’s, and other women's health concerns as well.

Me: what exactly is your interpretation on cutting off access and quality? (just to get a clear picture again) or definition? better word maybe?

Karen: Sure! Well, my interpretation is that our new administration has shown a complete disregard for women everywhere. We have brought in a cabinet of little man boys who seem to not think women are people.

Me: Thank you Karen!

Karen: Of course, my pleasure!

This article has made one voice heard about women’s issues. I hope to make other voices heard with future articles.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
