I had an idea for an article that was more or less mediocre. On the verge of sleep one night, my brain was like “hey, so you wrote a super lame article, I have an idea for another one.” Then my brain started flashing moments of TV history where I cried and screamed at my TV. I typed them all in my S Memo feature on my Samsung Galaxy S4 and will share them. I am categorizing them by show. The moments aren’t in any particular order either. Spoilers alert for anyone who either has not watched these shows or just not that far into that particular show.
Degrassi:
I’ve been an avid follower of the Degrassi franchise for years (since 2001 to be exact). I’m lucky I narrowed it down to just three moments that made me cry or scream. The first moment is JT Yorke’s death. That was something I absolutely did not see coming at all. The writers did really well with how it was done and how the other characters handled it in the next episode. I cried so much, I still cannot watch “Rock This Town” without crying. The second episode/moment that makes me cry and just sick is “Jane Says.” This episode was about a character named Jane who suddenly starts to have flashbacks of her father molesting her as a child. It makes me sick that it is such a reality. It is one of my favorite episodes, not because of the content, but how great the writers did and how awesome of an actress Paula Brancati is. The third moment is in the episode “Zombie” when Maya finally breaks down and talks about her late boyfriend’s suicide. She expresses exactly how she feels and it hits you in the feels. I’ve been watching, or TRYING to watch the new series on Netflix, but it makes me scream because I’m constantly rolling my eyes at the drama. What also made me mad is that they started this spin-off series with old characters. No one is going to know that Maya’s boyfriend committed suicide and why Miles hates his dad.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
Buffy is one of my other favorite shows (with the exception of seasons 3 & 4). I narrowed this down to two moments, and it really was not hard. The first moment is the episode “The Gift” when *huge spoiler alert* Buffy dies. She realizes she has to sacrifice herself to save Dawn her sister from dying, but also the world from Hell breaking loose. Her speech at the end is what makes me lose it and ugly cry like a baby. All applause goes to Sarah Michelle Gellar. The second moment is the episode “Grave” when Willow has all the magic inside of her and feels a strong desire to destroy the world; the person who stops her from doing so is Xander, the one with no kind of magical powers whatsoever by just telling her that he loves her. Again, last three minutes of this episode has me ugly crying until the end.
Friends:
I’m still watching this all the way through on Netflix. I picked two moments that were the most memorable. One of them is a happy cry and that was in “The One With The Proposal” when Monica and Chandler propose to each other. That was such a wonderful moment. I don’t usually happy cry at TV shows but that made me happy cry. The second moment that was just so sad for me was in “The One Hundredth” when Phoebe had the triplets as a surrogate for her brother and his wife. She asked her friends for a moment alone with them and the camera just pans on her crying as she realizes that she has to give them up. So sad!
Being Erica:
Being Erica has become another one of my favorite shows. It’s a Canadian show about this girl who’s in her 30s and still does not have her life together and she hits a rock bottom. That’s when a therapist talks to her and asks her to write down her regrets, and he takes her through time to do something differently. One particular moment was in the episode “Leo," we learn that her brother Leo had died in a fire. Dr Tom told her that she couldn’t prevent him from dying because that would be playing God. So in the end what she does is convinces Leo to write a letter because he was mad at everyone that day. That letter was so sweet and so sad. It brought closure to Erica’s family (Erica’s family doesn’t know about her time-travel.) The second moment is in the episode “Jenny From The Block” when Erica realizes that her friendship with Jenny is a one-sided friendship. She spends too much time trying to help Jenny out of messes, but when Erica needs her, Jenny never comes through. This happens to most of us. It was heartbreaking because Jenny was one of Erica’s very best friends. Paula Brancati (I mentioned her earlier who played Jenny) was fantastic once again. All four seasons of this show is on Hulu and I’d recommend this show to anyone and everyone. It kinda is a slow start, but I highly recommend it.
Kyle XY:
I cannot do an article like this without mentioning this show. This show is just another of one of my all-time favorites. It was a short series on what was ABC Family about a boy found naked with amnesia and no belly button. A family adopts him and they find out that this young man lived in a pod for 16 years similar to an infant in a womb. So he was super smart, had some supernatural abilities, but was still a teenage boy. It was so hard to choose for there is so many moments that made me cry and scream at my TV. There was especially screaming at my TV because the last episode “Bringing Down The House” ended on a cliff hanger due to the show suddenly cancelling. One moment that makes me cry so hard is in “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Jessi finds out through seeing her memories in a different way with Kyle’s help that her mother was murdered. Jessi is someone like Kyle (lived in a pod and has some supernatural abilities). She does not see the murder happen but could hear her mother’s lessening heartbeat through the door. She doesn’t understand why she can’t intervene, but it would be changing the future. I cry so much during this episode. Jaime Alexander’s talent as an actress shines in that episode and many others. I’d recommend you watch it but I don’t know how since Netflix took it off. I have the first and the third season on DVD, if that helps. The first and third seasons would be all you would need but the second season has so much back story that is prevalent to the story.
There you have it, the saddest moments in my TV history. There was plenty more. I had a couple moments from Once Upon A Time, Parks and Recreation, Switched at Birth, Pretty Little Liars on my list, but didn’t want this article to be too long. My brain exploded a little with this idea. Maybe eventually I’ll do a part two and include those and others that I think of along the way. Tell me your moments when you most cried and screamed at your TV.
