The Failures of the First Months

Donald Trump and his administration has failed on most of their promises, but will lie to the people about them - and we're not even at 100 days.

The Failures of the First Months

We're just under 100 days into the presidency of Donald Trump. Normally, the first 100 days are used to see where the administration is going and what accomplishments have already been made. But Donald Trump is no “normal” president. From his backtracking and blatant lies to the American people (and the world for that matter) and his empty promises to “make America great again,” to being investigated by the FBI for possible ties to Russia and ignoring the Constitution in his lawmaking, we've opened ourselves up to what every country must go through – a tyrant who will one day fall and make the country work to never have this happen again. Germany, England, Rome, and Egypt all have been through this, and history is repeating itself once again. Let's look at what has happened so far with this administration and what the effects will be – because Trump and his cultists do not look for the future, but to what the alt-right wants: another Nazi empire.

The biggest promise of the Trump campaign, beyond the highly illegal imprisonment of political rivals, was the border wall between the United States and Mexico. The plan was for Mexico to pay for the multi-trillion dollar project, but now Trump has backtracked and said the American people will pay for it, but eventually Mexico “will pay us back.” This was one of his many Day One promises. So what's happened with it? Well, Congress has been asked for $1billion for the first 62 miles of the border, which itself is well over 2,000 miles. At this base cost, not including worker pay or even any of the expenses on international affairs (due to part of the construction being on the Mexican side), the border wall would take roughly ten years to complete, if not more. What's likely is that Trump will once again go back on his promises and say he meant a better fence, despite describing in vivid detail his wall – even when there was controversy in Mexico over Trump's border wall threat, he said “the wall just got bigger.” The taxpayers will not see the money back, and Trump will continue to make an empty promise and only further the national debt.

As per many, many video clips from Trump rallies, the next major facet is the Muslim ban. The travel bans put in place, then promptly put on hold by federal judges, themselves are not the problem. The reasoning is that Trump called for a quote “total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” during his campaign, had entire sections supporting this on his website, and Rudy Giuliani himself said Trump asked him how to ban Muslims “constitutionally.” With this in mind, the bans are in a gray area of constitutionality – while not outright illegal, the direct result is a violation of the First Amendment, of which the Supreme Court has ruled that non-citizens are entitled to. Trump and his alt-right followers cite a 1952 ruling saying the president has the right to block people that pose a danger to America from entering – while ignoring a 1960s amendment to said law that forbid the blocking of ethnic or religious groups. Citing Obama's six month hiatus on Iraqi refugees doesn't make sense either, as that was due to the FBI discovering a loophole in the vetting process, and people were still allowed to apply and go through, they just couldn't enter the country. Trump's bans, however, are based solely on racism and Islamaphobia. This is a man who called for a database of all Muslims in America, and even suggested they wear a symbol so we know – this is exactly what Hitler ordered for Jews during the Third Reich. So knowing Trump can get away with anything if he says it's for national security, in theory, he easily could institute, for lack of a better term, another Final Solution to “protect” the people – and his team has even cited Japanese internment as a legal precedent.

Repeal and replacement of Obamacare is yet another promise that crashed and burned like Trump Vodka or Trump Steak. After years of the Republicans trying to get the Affordable Care Act (ACA) repealed, and every vote failing, the party seemed to be on track to get their healthcare plan, which of course benefited the rich upper class more than the middle and lower. That was until the Democrats and some fringe Republicans in the Senate refused to vote and information was leaked of possible threats made to get votes. Paul Ryan met with Trump and took the bill off the floor, stating in a press conference that “Obamacare is the law of the land.” Trump made a response that was through gritted teeth, acting like it was all his idea. Now the alt-right is calling for Paul Ryan to step down because he “turned against his country.” But who really cares what the alt-right has to say about anybody? Oh wait, Steve Bannon does, and he's one of Trump's top advisers. The healthcare bill is being currently reconsidered, and Bernie Sanders has offered to work with Trump on a single-payer system, something that oddly enough, Trump supported in his early days of running for office. Of course this will go nowhere and will be deemed “too expensive” while Trump is using taxpayer money for personal reasons.

The vacations the Obama family took were yet another subject of disapproval by Trump. He said he would not take a vacation nor a salary during his time in office, saying he would rarely leave the White House. Yet every weekend since taking office, Trump has flown to Florida and took an official vacation after only a few weeks in the White House. He has golfed several times in the last ten weeks, putting him on pace to out-golf Obama – again, another thing the right/Trump complained about but are silent on now. Claiming these are “working vacations” is also just another lie pushed by Breitbart, InfoWars, Fox News, and the White House. As stated earlier, these vacations and weekly trips to Mar-a-Largo, the “winter/southern White House” (a claim that actually does have some factual basis believe it or not) or a golf course are being paid for by the taxpayers, all while the administration says we need to cut down spending on things like the National Endowment for the Arts/PBS, welfare programs, the State Department, and the EPA so that we could increase defense spending – something we already spend way too much on. Just so someone who said they wouldn't leave the White House can go south for a weekend and avoid his actual job of running the country.

Of course, I cannot go into every little failure this administration has had over the last couple of months. That would be too long and quite honestly, there's little good Trump has done for the country, let lone plans to do. From using executive orders to do whatever he wants and bypassing Congress, to insulting foreign leaders and political rivals, to the ongoing investigation, these first few months have been among the most troubling in American history. It is up to the Senate, the House, and the FBI on whether or not Trump and his cabinet will even make it through an entire year of presidency, leading to a possible Paul Ryan administration. We can only wait and see where things go, but we aren't just sitting ducks waiting for something to happen. We can call our representatives, protest, speak out against the government, because we have the freedom to do so. Will the Trump-era policies dramatically effect America? Yes, and not in a good way. But there is always repeal and replace, and making sure someone like this never gets elected again. For now, let's just keep updated and stay involved, and hope the next president can bring us back to being great.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
