Ever since I was really little, I have been obsessed with Britney Spears. I threw a Britney Spears-themed birthday party when I was turning three, and when people asked me what I wanted to be when I was older, my answer was either a mom or Britney Spears. I wanted to be Britney Spears when I grew up. A little bit of me still does. I am so obsessed that this past Halloween at a couple's costume date night, my date and I dressed up as the denim dynamic duo Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.
As such, I connect with almost all of her songs. So for this week's post I decided to connect her music with a topic we can all relate to: essays. Here is Britney Spears's outline of the essay writing process.
1. "I Wanna Go" ("Femme Fatale")
Your natural reaction to when your teacher announces an essay that is due in two weeks. Can I leave class now? Do I have to be in this class? Can I drop it? I want out.
2. "Anticipating" ("Britney")
You set a date for when to write your essay. If you start it a week before it's due, you'll get it done in no time, and you won't even stress about it. But then you make plans... and push back your plan to write the essay...And soon enough you have spent almost two weeks procrastinating.
3. "Do Somethin'" ("Greatest Hits: My Prerogative")
It's 10 p.m., and your essay is due at 8 a.m. the next morning. You have to start writing it, right now. You yell at yourself for not starting sooner, and begin looking at the prompt.
4. "Break the Ice" ("Blackout")
You have your title picked out, and wrote your headline. You begin to type your introduction, drawing it out until it takes up almost your whole first page.
5. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" ("...Baby One More Time")
You begin complaining about your paper, but really you're complaining about how long you have procrastinated. You cannot believe you have to write this six-page essay.
6. "I'm a Slave 4 U" ("Britney")
You feel like you'll be writing this essay for the rest of your life. Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Will I make it to the conclusion?
7. "If U Seek Amy" ("Circus")
You start to implicitly, or explicitly, curse your essay, your major, and your life decisions. Who wants to write a paper on cloning? Who wants to be a doctor? Why did I say yes to going out last weekend?
8. "Work B**ch" ("Britney Jean")
You're getting this paper done. It is now 1 a.m. and you are three pages in. You have so much left to do, but you have accomplished so much.
9. "Blur" ("Circus")
You are so tired now. Nothing you write makes sense. Yet you are too far gone to edit your paper, or try to make more sense. You just keep writing.
10. "Oops!... I Did It Again" ("Oops!... I Did It Again")
You have said everything you could, and only end up with five-and-a-half pages. You need to get it to six. Now you are filling in your sentences, redundantly rewording and repeating ideas you have stated in the previous paragraph.
11. "Don't Cry" ("Britney Jean")
You want to quit your paper and just not go to class in the morning, but this paper is important for your grade, and your mom would kill you if you got another C, so you try to not cry. Man, it's so hard to not cry at 3 a.m.
12. "Kill the Lights" ("Circus")
You finally finished your paper! It's 3:30 a.m. and you turn your lights off, trying to squeeze in a few hours of sleep before class.
13. "Freakshow" ("Blackout")
You show up to class a mess. You haven't showered, you're wearing your comfiest and sloppiest sweatpants, and you're downing coffee. You're not sure if you can thrive off of four hours of sleep.
14. "Stronger" ("Oops!... I Did It Again")
You turn in your paper, and you feel so accomplished. You are now skilled in writing essays. You can go through the day on just four hours of sleep. You are no longer that essay's property. You're stronger now than yesterday.
15. "...Baby One More Time" ("...Baby One More Time")
Just when you get back to your normal sleep schedule and make big plans for the weekend, you have another essay due. Back to the process.
