In the light of June 12th, 2016 the nation heard the news about the tragic mass shooting in Orlando Florida. The shooting took place at Pulse LGBT nightclub in downtown Orlando Florida, around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.
The club had just called last call for drinks, and around that time the gunman Omar Mir Seddique Mateen opened fire and in the process he left over 50 with injuries and 50 dead. He took the lives of 50 innocent people that were members of LGBT community.
The shooting has been labeled a hate crime on the LGBT community. The father of the gunman has come forward and issued a statement saying that the gunman was not doing this with any religious affiliation and that he was outraged by seeing two males kissing out in public, and that is what caused this heartbreaking shooting.
Once I heard about this horrible indecent today, I opened up my Facebook app and was overwhelmed with all the posts about what had happened in the middle of the night.
But one thing that stuck out to me was the close minded opinions of my peers in my small town. Instead of realizing this a nationwide problem they are interested in directing hate, the same hate that killed 50+ people and caused the worst shooting in the history, at specific groups.
Let's address the elephant in the room. This is not a gun problem, this is not an Islamic/Muslim problem, this an issue of hate.
People need to understand there is a bigger world than what we are taught here in San Antonio, FL. Growing up in a small town it is easy to be subjected to a closed minded way of thinking, but you need to be able to come to grips with life once you grow up and to stop being the kinds of people that lead to hate crimes.
We as a nation need to stand together as one and be here for the families of those that lost loved ones because of a hate crime.
So as the next few days play out, please hold your loved ones close and keep those that lost in your hearts.
No matter what race, religion, or who you are in general we need to stand as one. Love will always win
