Pictures of animals are all over the Internet. There are countless Twitter accounts, Instagram accounts, and Facebook pages created daily that are solely dedicated to spreading the cuteness far and wide. One of the most popular of these accounts has been nicknamed "The Canines of New York," though you might recognize it as The Dogist.
The Dogist, like Humans of New York, posts pictures of dogs living in New York City with their name, breed, age, city, and occasionally a short biography or comment from the owner. Created in 2013 by Elias Weiss Friedman, The Dogist has gained over 1.7 million followers on Instagram and is the home of over 3,000 pictures of dogs of all different breeds and from all around the world, including some dogs available for adoption at adoption agencies.
Weiss has traveled the world to photograph dogs, including cities in China, around Europe, and all across the United States. His project, a simple photo-documentary series, began with a single photo of a boxer in the streets of Vienna, the caption simply reading "Boxer, Vienna," and has since gathered photos of thousands of dogs.
The Dogist has also created a program called Give a Dog a Bone, designed to get dogs out of shelters, improve shelter conditions, and supporting featured shelters by selling dog bones on their website. All proceeds from the purchased bones go directly to the shelters, and bones are personally delivered to shelter dogs by The Dogist. Once delivered, a picture is taken of the dog with the new bone and the donor of the bone is cited. In 2015, Give a Dog a Bone raised almost $6,000, all of which was given to the featured shelters.
While the project is run entirely by Friedman himself, he also sells high resolution pictures and signed prints from an online store. On his website, there is also an option to donate to The Dogist. "$5 buys me a lens cloth to get dog slobber off of my lens," reads one of the suggested donations. They range from $5 to $100, which would go toward a new travel series.
Friedman published a book in October, titled "The Dogist: Photogenic Encounters with 1,000 Dogs". His book features different sections of dogs, including puppies, cones of shame, rare breeds, dogs in fancy outfits, and working dogs. It's available both online and in bookstores across the country, and every copy works to make the world just a little bit brighter with pictures of dogs.
