Hi, I’m Maggie Vanoni.

I am a current journalism major at the University of Oregon with a focus in magazine writing. I have a strong passion for writing and storytelling. I believe that everyone has a story and that there are stories everywhere you look, though they may just take a little digging. To me, writing is a universal form of communication that everyone can understand. Writing is not only my passion, but also a motivator that strengthens me. My ability to write well is something that I take pride in and something that I am continually thankful for.

I am a native born and raised Oregonian from Portland. As I have gotten older, I have really grown to love the city. Portland is full of adventure and experiences, two of my favorite things. I love adventuring and trying new things. I have a wide sense of curiosity, and I find exploring relaxing as well.

I describe myself as fun, personable, friendly, outgoing, curious and an adventurer. My favorite things to do include: traveling, writing, trying new foods, cuddling with dogs, camping, and exploring. My favorite place to go to relax is the Oregon Coast. Even though the ocean is below freezing and you can count the number of days throughout the year that swimwear is appropriate to wear on your hand, it is still the most peaceful place for me.

Some of my favorite things include dark chocolate, dogs, beaches, popcorn, ice cream, music from the early 2000s, and laughter. If I could, I would spend the whole day laughing until I cry, while eating Ben and Jerry’s and cuddling with my two dogs on a beach. That would be a perfect day.

My dream career would be writing for a popular magazine, preferably a physical publication. That said, I do realize that this world is quickly becoming online based. I would love to write profiles on people and soft news.

As a writer on Odyssey, I plan on writing personal and relatable stories. I would like to use my previous experiences in life to further share my opinions and experiences with anyone who’ll listen. I am not very much into politics and hard news stories, so I wouldn’t necessarily like to write about stories of those topics.

The stories I plan on creating will be soft news and personal, I would even love to write personal profiles as well. I think that the Odyssey is a safe place and I would like to express my feelings and experiences freely. In so, I would hope that readers could learn and better benefit in their own lives from my stories.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
