The Dangers of a 'No Feelings' Culture

Being afraid to feel is being afraid of the world.

The Dangers of a 'No Feelings' Culture

Nowadays relationships are very casual and I don't limit this observation to simply romantic ones. With this being said, I have come to an understanding that people fear many things and that feelings are now on that list.

"Catching feelings" is what I hear on a regular basis. Sometimes I perceive this casual hook-up culture as one big contest as to who will "catch feelings" first. In other words, who will develop feelings first (obviously). Feelings are now referred to as if they're some horrible disease.

It is not only in romantic relationships, but even in friendships. It's come to a point where we stress loyalty but, the minute someone makes a mistake or hurts someone, the only way to ever avoid another situation like this is to avoid all feeling in general. This is not only counter productive, but I also attribute this to a new trend that has been sweeping our culture and social media feeds: being mean.

Being mean has become some new trend because it protects you from the big bad world, right? When it comes right down to it it’s just another way to bottle up our feelings. In doing this we lose sight of ourselves. By disconnecting from loved ones and friendships we also ignore ourselves. If this spreads we will only hurt ourselves and others. It's important to be forward with our feelings. Life would be boring without it! Relationships will not develop with this kind of thinking and you won't grow as a person either.

Be kind to others and yourself. Cry a little. It's normal.

Acting like you don't have a heart isn’t good for you. I, like most people, hate confrontation. But sometimes, with the right environment and time, it is necessary. Be honest with yourself and others.

This doesn't just go for the more feminine people of the world. Masculinity does not mean that you do not have the right to feel things or become emotional.

Don't give in to this trend. Being afraid to feel is being afraid of the world. Allow yourself to experience life to the fullest! Obviously you should always be respectful when expressing your feelings, but do it. I promise that you'll be happier in the long run.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
