I get it…
If you’re like me, then you have a burning competitive spirit. You thrive for the competition and the drive to make things happen. You get upset for the simplest signs of defeat and will not go down without a fight. Although having these traits shows discipline, ambition and a winning attitude which can transfer into great academic success, it can also backfire into a wave of problems concerning sensitivity and when to call it quits. There are certain things that can either help uplift a person or tear them down, and having an over competitive spirit could hurt you in the long run. With school starting soon, one major way that you can help solve these problems is to have an understanding as to when and where to display certain traits and characteristics. Here are a five things you can use to differentiate between being a team player as opposed to being a lone wolf.
1. Get to know who to compete with and when to compete…
There is nothing wrong with being competitive, but there is something wrong with who you are being competitive with and when to be competitive. You can be competitive with people on an athletic level can take the opposition by all means. I do it all the time when I’m playing basketball, or any kind of sport. I see nobody as my friend when it comes to competing, only the finish line. But then comes the when part. You have to understand that there is a time and a place for everything, and what you do have an effect on the future relationships between other people. So bring out that competitive side, but know when to stop and realize that they might need help with a particular situation, rather than creating a bigger problem.
2. Make sure that you have a soft side to you…
Everyone likes a person who is understandable, can comprehend and can relate to the person in need. Being over competitive can sometimes hurt the relationships that you are trying to mend, especially when the person does not necessarily feel the need to compete with you. Life is a feeling process and having a person who is always trying to come on top isn’t the best way to go about as to making that a characteristic. Having that soft side that listens and understands can go a long way to helping someone in need of help, and can also improve on your people skills.
3. Help others to have that competitive side…
Make sure that any benefit that you have or anything that can help make the situation better you share it. By doing so, you can help bring together friendships that can be stronger and more situated into making a developed community of people working together to establish our future entrepreneurs. By helping others reach that competitive side, you are helping others become ambitious, and will push them to achieve new heights in ways that they wouldn’t imagine.
4. Reward the ones who show competitiveness…
Along with helping others reach that potential, you also have to reward them for the steps that they take to get to that point. Believe me when I say that becoming competitive and ambitious is not easy. There is a lot that go into taking that extra step and even though it has its benefits, it also takes a while to get to that point. You have to let them know that your there for them and that they are not alone. The best part of being competitive is showing sportsmanship afterwards. Those are two of the best traits to have going into the school year.
5. Have fun!!!
There is so much going on in the world right now that people forget to have fun in this time of need. Have fun and make sure that you take every obstacle one step at a time. The more fun you have competing, the better the reward. So go out there and break a leg.
Not really but you get the picture…
