The Detroit Color Run
"I'm not a runner, so why would I even want to do a 5k running?"
The Color Run is a magical experience. The Detroit Color Run was just held on Belle Isle on October 29th and let me tell you my experience. I am not a runner. Could I be? Probably, but this is not why I signed up for this event. Being more of a "Color Walker," I got to experience a few things.
1. The Beauty of Belle Isle
This place is absolutely breath-taking. Walking around in the cool autumn night, seeing families fishing right off of the water, the grand buildings on the island, or even being able to see the GM building across the water being lit up with pink strands for breast cancer. It was truly beautiful. The picture below is during the daytime, so imagine the nighttime beauty.
2. Exercise
A 5K is around 3.2 miles. My group ended up parking across the bridge which added on almost an extra 2 more miles. While walking (or running if you're a runner) around on Belle Isle, time seems to go by faster which in turn makes it not feel like exercise. This helps especially when you're with friends or family.
3. Meeting New People
We met so many new people last night. Having already participated in one color run, I got to share my experiences with others who haven't and those who have done multiple ones, shared their experience with me. Meeting new people, experiencing new cultures or ways of life just from attending one event is remarkable. Heck, you might even meet people and connect with them for more runs after!
4. Picture Perfect Opportunities
Did you really attend an event unless you post a picture? Attending The Color Run is a great way to market and PR not only yourself, but also the event. It creates an awareness of the event, which in turn generates more people such as friends and family to attend the event the next time around. The more the merrier.
5. New Tradition
This is my second year of doing the night time Color Run. I personally plan to do as many as possible because now when I hear or think of the happiest 5k, The Color Run automatically pops into my head. From being caked on with color run dust, to feeling accomplished each 1k, and then each 5k, you'll want to do more and more.
This is such an amazing experience, and everyone should have the opportunity to go out and try this type of event. To further add onto the cool aspects of this event, this year we received a shirt, headlight, glow-in-the-dark stickers, a skull cap, water balloons, and other little things for only around $20. It's an inexpensive, fun event to do for all ages and I encourage you to go to your next local Color Run and see for yourself. And the best think about this event is you can go at your own pace, or even walk. There is no competition for finishing first.
So get out and participate in your next local Color Run!
