Are you a girl who needs tips on how to make it as a new member of the Provo social scene? Look no further, ladies! Speaking from experience, this is the checklist for you. Here's everything you need to be a successful Provo girl.
At least five pairs of Bermuda shorts. Apparently these are fine to wear basically year round, despite obvious winter impracticalities, but let's face it, Bermuda shorts are basically pants anyway.
Jandals. Jandals know no gender boundaries. Everyone can enjoy these hideously ugly, ridiculously comfortable slides all the time.
A wedding Pinterest. Most girls have one, whether they talk about it or not. I don’t, but I know for a fact it’s an easy way to bond with other Provo girls while you stare at party favors for the wedding that’s probably closer than you think.
A lot of shade shirts. Those short sleeve ones, for layering with just about anything and everything in your closet. I swear the day I got to Utah, I was whisked away to Downeast Basics to pick up one in every color.
A white iPhone. If you don’t have one, are you even a Provo girl?
A working knowledge of the terms "dtr," "ncmo" and other essential BYU phrases that are used in conversation daily.
A passion for something. You'll find your people if you share a common interest, regardless of what that interest is. It helps to be really into a TV show or film series (you know what I’m talking about).
Know how to play the piano. Suddenly, your unique skill becomes a basic requirement to keep up, especially when you see a scrawny boy eyeing the Hinckley Hall piano with a printout of the latest Coldplay song in his hand, and know you need to get there first.
Pick a pattern: chevron, stripes, or polka dots. This pattern will rule your next 4 years here in Provo. Everything from your phone case, to your shoes, to your room decor must include this pattern.
Learn how to play beach volleyball. For some reason, this is all you do when hanging out the first two weeks of school. Don't make the mistake I did and come to school unprepared for this crucial party activity.
Plan for a foreign exchange. It’s a Provo girl rite of passage to go on a semester trip to either England or Jerusalem. After this exchange, this will be all you share with your unnecessarily large number of Instagram followers for the months and years to follow.
Lots of patience. For the types of boys mentioned in my last article. Refer to "The BYU Boy Checklist" for a full description of the boys you will encounter, in order to be most prepared for future dates with any Provo all-stars.
Independence. I'm serious about this one because you'll end up doing a lot of things on your own when you first come to Provo. Be ready for that and be prepared to be open and spontaneous. Some of the best nights here came from just being adventurous.
