You may, or may not, have heard the news. I still am trying to move forward, it’s only the first bill of many that will need to be passed to make this happen but, nonetheless, it is really happening.
What bill am I talking about? Well, the Senate decided last week to pass a bill that would lead to women having to register for the draft. Everyone feels quite differently about this. Women have been fighting for equality for a while, isn’t this just the next step? If you ask me, I think equal pay should come first; that’s a larger issue.
I have heard some guys’ opinions and they are all for it. When it comes to the military, they jump on that equality bandwagon quickly. Calm down, please. While everyone’s opinion is valid and worthy of sharing, you have to remember to look at the other side. You cannot all of a sudden decide that you are all for equality for just one issue. It is completely wrong to be all for equality when it is something you are told to do, and not when it is something you get.
As a woman, and a very opinionated one, I was quick to come up with my personal thoughts about this. So let me make a point here: men and women will never be equal! Not all will agree, but that is what I personally believe, and just like everyone else I have a right to express it. I don’t believe all women will start receiving equal pay, at least not in our lifetime. I think women will continue to be looked down upon by men, and continue to be seen as an object by many. I do think women will be required to register for the draft.
Here is the biggest difference between men and women, and what I consider a huge factor in my opinion of this bill. Women carry on the human race, while men do not. Whether women are put in combat positions or not, they all risk being killed by the enemy. If the women get killed, that is going to be a huge damper on the population. I think certain women are called to go into the armed forces, but not all. Another side to this is no matter what position you go into, you have to go through a certain existent of physical training. That is a lot more difficult for a five-foot, 100-pound women than it would be for a six-foot, 200-pound male. Men are naturally going to be more capable for anything physical, that’s just the way it is.
Who is going to parent children if both parents get drafted? What if they both get killed? It would be devastating! When I get married, I want to have kids and raise them, not be forced to go to war. In divorce courts, and others, judges typically side to keep the children with the mother. Why would they take a woman away from her children and risk the possibility of her getting killed? I do not believe the government should request any women to go to war, especially during child-bearing and primary parenting years. This may sound dramatic, but it’s reality.
There have been ladies that said they would love the opportunity to serve their country. Ok, so go join! That is totally an option, but not all women feel the same way. That person may never actually get drafted and maybe I would, then I would leave my family and all my dreams behind and I would be crushed. I am not called to that life, but many are! I applaud anyone who has those dreams or aspirations, or just feels called to it, but women have such a huge role in society. I don’t want my purpose in life to not be fulfilled due to the violence of war. The government should not be to tell me my purpose in life if they can’t even get women out of sex trafficking.
Guys think they would be happy for women to register; they would love if their daughter got to serve their country. Side note: these guys don’t have children yet, so they don’t actually know. Should they have a daughter, I don’t think they would feel the same way, or at least not so quick to speak up about it. I sure don’t think my dad would be crazy about me serving.
If the government decides it is for the ultimate benefit for the country to register for the draft, then so be it. But I do believe we have a lot of other equality issues that should be fixed first. Nor are we currently in need of extra people for the military.
