Almost everyone in college is well aware of Netflix, and are most likely hooked on a TV or movie. I have compiled a list of some of the best of Netflix, shows or movies, for you to watch next.
"Gilmore Girls"
This show features iconic mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory. It follows both of their lives, from when Rory is 16 to when she graduates college. The show has witty writing and fast-paced talking. It's both highly entertaining and heartwarming.
"The Spectacular Now "
Directed by James Ponsoldt and starring Shailene Woodley (Divergent) and Miles Teller (Whiplash), this movie is a relatable coming-of-age story. It centers on Sutter, a popular party-boy, and his budding relationship with "nice girl" Amy. This isn't a typical teenage movie though, as it tackles real issues and real characters.
"Friends"
Touted as one of the most popular shows in existence, Friends lives up to the hype. It features the memorable and endearing characters of Chandler, Ross, Joey, Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe, and follows their wacky adventures. Written smartly, this show is addicting.
"Anne with an E"
This reboot of "Anne of Green Gables" is darker and more somber. It tells the story of Anne Shirley, an orphan girl who finds a home with a loving family. However, she struggles to fit in at school and escape from her emotionally scarring past. Fans of the novel and original TV show will find this Netflix reboot delightfully different.
"Freaks and Geeks"
Although this comedy show only lasted for a single season, it is still relevant and highly funny today. This show is what started James Franco and Seth Rogen's careers as comedians. It is both written well while also delivering good messages. Old but gold.
"Black Mirror"
Black Mirror is an anthology series about technology, and the various consequences of depending too much on it. Each episode is different and follows different characters, so there's no need to watch in order. Each episode is poignant, as it makes a particular comment on society.
"Sherlock"
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, "Sherlock" is the re-imagined, modern version of the famous detective. While set in modern day London, Sherlock must solve crimes along with his sharp-tongued companion Dr. Watson. The two characters have a witty banter between them that keeps the show humorous during more serious moments.
"Prince of Egypt"
This animated movie tells the story of Moses and his upbringing, followed by his leading the Hebrew people to freedom. It is a powerful film, filled with beautiful music and animation.
"The Breadwinner"
Directed by Angelina Jolie, this animated feature tells the tale of a young girl growing up in Taliban controlled Afghanistan. When her father is imprisoned by the Taliban, she is forced to disguise herself as a man to help her family survive. Filled with gorgeous animation, this film is culturally significant and does not hide away from displaying troubling things.
"The Inbetweeners"
This is a British comedy centered on four wacky and socially awkward friends. It follows Simon, Neil, Jay, and Will as they try to navigate the perils of high school and the pains of adolescence. Filled with dark and crude humor, this show is not for everyone but is hilarious.
'Kubo and the Two Strings"
Using stop-motion animation, "Kubo" is a beautifully made film about a young boy who must go on a quest to find his late father's suit of armor in order to defeat a vengeful spirit. While subtle, the film conveys a beautiful message about the power of forgiveness and love.
"Heart of Dixie"
Although this is a lesser-known TV show, "Heart of Dixie" is reminiscent of "Gilmore Girls" with its small-town charm and small cast. Zoe Hart finds herself in a small town in Alabama after her father died, after living in New York her entire life. There, she meets memorable and endearing characters.
I hope this list is found useful for some people, and that some of the shows or movies on it are now someone's new favorite.
