Raising all girls who were so close together in age couldn't have been easy for my parents. In 1991, my twin sisters were born. I came into the world around fourteen months later, and my little sister was born nearly seventeen months after me. Before my little sister was born, my parents tried for a boy. After they found out it was a girl, four daughters was enough for them to stop.
I couldn't imagine raising four girls who were so close together in age. With all the fussiness, whining, picking out clothes, and making sure everything was fair. To that dreaded stage when all your girls reach middle school or high school and you have to worry more about the boys coming around and how they treat your daughters.
I remember talking to my sisters and thinking, "I wish we all would've had a brother! I wonder what he would've looked like!" Sure we always wanted an older brother to look up to or a younger brother to be our guy best friend, but I was always grateful to be born into a family of girls and three sisters for many reasons.
YOU ALWAYS HAD A BEST FRIEND
Growing up, you were never worried about having friends because you always had some living with you. No matter what you wanted to do, you could just walk across the hall and ask them to go shopping with you, play four-square with you in the driveway, or ask them for help on your math assignment. Not only did you have friends living with you, you got to be friends easily with all of your sisters' friends. Having them as your sister made it easier to make friends with people who weren't your age.
YOU HAD MORE THAN ONE WARDROBE
When you grow up with all sisters, you have four times as many clothes to choose from. You all have your own closet, but you all raid each other's to switch up your outfits. Forget buying that new shirt you want...you know your sister has one you can wear at home. If they didn't want to share their clothes, at least you ended up getting all the hand-me-downs. Sisters help you do your makeup and straighten the parts of your hair that you cannot reach.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE SOMEONE TO ASK FOR ADVICE
Whether it be asking them if a certain outfit looks okay on you, advice on how to deal with a guy you like, or asking them about something that is troubling you. Sisters make the best friends in the world because they never make you feel like you're unlovable. They have your back no matter what, even if they know you are in the wrong. There is always someone you can reach out to and talk to when you have a sister. Growing up in an all girl household meant many nights of sleepovers in each other's rooms, staying up all night talking about anything until we got yelled at to be quiet.
THEY LEAD THE PATH FOR YOU IN LIFE
Whether your sisters were younger or older, you always had someone to get through school with. They helped show you around school on your first day, or you may have been older and helped your little sister find her way to her classrooms. Your teachers, coaches, and other students always asked you if you were related to each other. That's why I was always grateful my older sisters set such a good example and were well-liked. You always had someone to eat lunch with. As you got older, you talked about your goals and you helped each other reach them. When my parents got divorced, my sisters were the people I looked to. They became my support system in every aspect of my life. When you got asked in school who your role model was, your sister was always the first person you thought of.
Sure your sisters will get on your nerves a few times..or maybe for a week straight. But in the end, your sisters will always be someone you can rely on. Growing up with sisters makes it possible to have continuous lazy days of watching TV together, having a best friend for life, a workout partner, someone who picks up your tab when they feel like it, and on the plus side... your whole wedding party will already be picked out. Growing up in an all girl household has truly been a blessing.
