Having a relationship in college is never an easy task. It takes a lot of dedication, understanding, and patience in order for the relationship to work. For some people, having a relationship while in college may not be the greatest idea. For others it seems perfectly fine. Having a relationship in college can help you in the long run because it builds communication skills, eliminates an excuse not to study, lends moral support, great advice, and is a positive influence. I strongly believe that the age-old argument that dating while in college is bad is false. It is OK to have a relationship in college because it can benefit you in the end.
Some argue that dating while in college is a bad idea since it might be a cause for distraction from your studies, because the couple would want to spend their free time together rather than doing their work or studying. In turn, both of the couples’ grades will drop and they will fail their classes and maybe fail out of the college. Another example is that dating while in college will limit the couples’ college experience. The argument for this is that the couple will be too busy going out on dates with each other or having too much quality time together. This will hinder the couples’ chance of meeting new people, joining clubs, and/or discovering what themselves or their hidden talents. In relationships the person can be bias while giving their advice because they want to make their boyfriend/ girlfriend happy so they will tell them whatever they want to hear even if they know that not might be what is best for them. There can also a lack of support because even if one person may not like what the other is doing because it may take time away from them, so the other will stop supporting their significant other in order to get the message across that they need to stop whatever they were doing. Finally, there can be a negative influence in the relationship. One, the other, or both will influence each other to do to either skip class and not do their homework or study so they can spend more time together and/or do something that could be dumb or worse dangerous for the other. But that is not always the case when it comes to dating in college. Actually dating while in college can benefit you in the end.
Dating in college can help you in so many ways, like improving your communication skills. When it comes to dating you and your significant other will talk often and if the relationship progresses, you will eventually have to talk your S/O’s folks and other members of their family. This helps you because later you will be more comfortable talking to your professors, your peers, and future employers. It will also help you become a better listener, rather you just talking you will have to listen to your S/O’s conversations even if the topic is something you are not interested in or something you are not really comfortable listening to. By listening to them this will help you in school and later in the work force because there are going to be topics of which that doesn’t interest you or a wish not to discuss, but unable to avoid due to certain reasons. You will then have that practice of having to listen to those type of topics. This skill in turn will help expand your horizon and help you have a better understanding of the world and how others might perceive it.
Another positive thing about dating in college is that you’d always have a study partner. Even if the person you are dating may not have the same major as you, you are still able to study together. The person you are dating can help with studying for an exam, reviewing your essays before submitting them, homework, and if one is better or has a better understanding of a subject than the other then they can always help the other out and vice versa. Also they can make sure that you stay focus and don’t get distracted. Another thing to look at is there is a reason for them to get their work done; they have set goal in mind, to finish all other their work so they have that time to chill or hang out with their S/O. That means homework is done on time, paper is written, reviewed, and submitted before its due date, and you are more prepared for that quiz or exam. This will not only help both of the couple’s be better prepared for their class but also improve their grades and give a higher chance of making the Dean’s list.
In college you are going to make some hard decisions that might affect you, and you are going to need someone to be there for you to give you some advice. In some cases your family and close friends may not be in same town as you so who else to turn to than the person you are dating. Your S/O knows you probably better than anyone else and they know what you are going through. The great thing about dating in college is that you have that moral support and always have someone to give you advice when you need it. You are able to sit and tell your S/O what you might have planned, but are not sure whether you should go for it or not. In return they can give you their opinion, advice, or full support and you know it’s not biased because you know they want what is best for you and they want to make sure that you are making the right decisions.
One major aspect when it comes to dating in college is always having a positive influence. Without it you could end up messing up you and your future, but your S/O will make sure that doesn’t happen. While in college sometimes you are going to want to do your work later, not go to class, and/or do something that could be dumb or dangerous. The good thing about dating in college is that your S/O will make sure that you do your homework now rather than later, encourage you to go to class, and not to do anything irresponsible. They will also make sure that they follow the same example so that you know you’re not the only one doing their homework, going to class, and having fun but being smart and safe about it. Both can help each other go the extra mile by encouraging them to more than what is required by their professors, at home, and at work. Another great thing about dating someone who is a positive influence is that you can do the same and help each other be the best as they can be and help each other achieve his/her goals in life.
Having a relationship is college can be difficult at times because in college you have to make time for studying, hanging out with friends, and on top of that having dates with your S/O. But in college you can do all three because the person you are dating is on the same boat as you.
